Ludhiana, March 20
Dr V.M. Kohli, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, Hero DMC Heart Institute, recently represented India at the international conference of the World Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Lucern in Switzerland.

Mr Prem Nath Gupta, Director of the institute in a press statement today said that over 500 cardiac surgeons had gathered there from all over the world to present their works and Dr Kohli was the only one from India to make an oral presentation, based on the study done at the Hero DMC Heart Institute by him and his team, on the topic ‘Transit Time Flow Measurement of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft’.

This is the first study of its kind done in the country. The study was so well received at the world conference that the University of Trondheim of Norway has decided to take up a collaborative study with Hero DMC Heart Institute.

While telling about his study Dr Kohli informed that normally once the bypass graft had been put during the surgery to check the working of graft, the cardiac surgeon does not check the adequacy of the flow in the newly constructed grafts while doing the surgery and before shifting the patient to recovery. He further added, “This means that many grafts may not be flowing and may cause major problems, including death of the patient”.

Dr Kohli emphasised that the flowmeter could detect any problem in the graft on the operation table, which can be immediately corrected before closing the chest.

Dr Kohli stressed that during the observations, all the graphs were made while doing the surgery and were tested in the operation theatre before shifting the patient to recovery. “If this practice is followed completely by heart surgeons all over the country, it can bring wonderful results by reducing the mortality rate”, said Dr Kohli.
