Surgeon invited to world congress

Dr Kuldip Singh, honorary secretary, Indian Association of Laparoscopic Surgery, has been invited to the eighth world congress on endoscopic surgery to be held in New York from March 13 to 17.

He will chair the scientific session and deliver a talk on “Complications in laparoscopic surgery” and how to avoid bile duct injuries in difficult gall bladder cases.

He will also compare the results from the developing countries.

He is of the opinion that “in developing countries like India, we get more complicated cases compared to the West”.

He stressed upon the patients of gall bladder stone cases to get themselves checked and treated early to avoid complications.

SGFI to send teams for international meets

The Secretary-General of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), Mr Pritam Singh Chhabra, said the federation would send school teams to participate in international school tournaments organised by the International School Sport Federation (ISSF).

Indian schools teams regularly participate in Asian schools meet held by the Asian School Sport Federation. Sport meets to be organised at the international level in next few months include handball (Greece), cross country the Czech Republic), table tennis (Slovakia), volleyball (Puerto Rico) and gymnastics (France).

The SGFI will celebrate the golden jubilee this year and plan to hold events Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.

Punjab held the National School Games after other states had refused to do so. But school games are given the same importance at other national meets, laments Mr Chhabra.

He said he would try his best to arrange for a hostel facilities for school sportspersons.

The Punjab Education Department, during the past few years, has organised a number of tournaments at the national and international level. It was the combined efforts of the whole team of the Education Department that the Asian school hockey meet in January 2001, the four-nation league school cricket meet this January, the National School Games from 1999 at Moga, Anandpur Sahib and Patiala were held successfully.

Body building meet

The 13th ‘Mr Chandigarh’ and 2nd Classic Mr Chandigarh Body Building Championship will be organised by the Chandigarh Amateur Body Building Association, Chandigarh, at DAV College Auditorium, Sector 10. According to Mr Sunil Walia, President of the association, the weighing-in and pre-judging will take place from 9 a.m. onwards and final pose down along with the prize distribution to be held at 5.30 p.m. at the DAV College Auditorium, Sector 10.

More than 100 body builders are expected to take part in the above meet, comprising of participants from various clubs and gymnasiums of Chandigarh, Panchkula and SAS Nagar.

Cricket tourney

The superb knock by Vikram Sharma who scored 71 runs off 45 deliveries helped the High Court Cricket Club in defeating Sonell XI by six wickets in the second edition of the Jesus Cash Prize Cricket Tournament (Church of Jesus Christ) organised by the End Time Harvest Ministries being played here at the Gursagar grounds today.

Batting first, Sonell XI made 163 runs in the stipulated 25 overs. Anil Sharma made 51 runs and was the top scorer for his team.

Brief scores: Sonell XI: 163 runs for three (Vishal 48, Amit Sharma 50, Harminder Bawa 37); High Court CC: 167 runs for four in 24.5 overs (Vikram Sharma 71, Sandeep Gulati 24, Ajay Bhardwaj 2 for 24).

In another tie, AG Punjab XI beat Khalsa Cricket Club by four wickets.
