Blood donation camp for thalassaemics
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 4
For the aid of thalassemic children getting treatment at the thalassemia unit of the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Guru Nanak Engineering College hosted a blood donation camp on its premises in collaboration with the Department of Transfusion Medicine of the DMCH under the supervision of Dr Amarjit Kaur, Reader and incharge, Department of Transfusion Medicine, DMCH.

Students and teachers of the GNEC came forward enthusiastically to donate blood for the Thalassemic children, informed Dr Rohit Mehra, senior president, Department of Transfusion Medicine, who was present in the camp along with the medical intern, Dr Tarundeep Kaur. The blood will be screened and some shall be used for manufacture of components, said Dr Pavneet Kaur, senior resident, Department of Transfusion Medicine.

“Our major concern is to arrange adequate blood for the thalassemic children as their number is increasing day by day. Currently 103 patients are getting treatment in the special thalassemia unit of the DMCH and 100 to 120 units of blood are required every month to carry out their blood transfusion.

Their lives entirely depend upon availability of blood. This can only be made possible if people, specially youngsters, come forward for voluntary blood donation”, said Dr Amarjit.

Dr Praveen Sobti, Reader, Department of Paediatrics, said the “DMCH has been working with the Punjab Thalassemics Welfare Society. One unit of blood normally costs Rs 800 but the DMCH is helping these patients by providing blood at a very nominal rate i.e. Rs 300 with the help of the PTWS through the Red Cross Society, and admission is free for these patients.” She said that thalassemia was the commonest inherited disorder in the world and Punjab was the one in the worst-affected states.

Three to 15 per cent of Punjabi population had thalassemia trait but unfortunately people had very less awareness about the disease. The most painful fact was that many of these patients die because of unavailability of blood as they require one to two units of blood after every 15 to 20 days all through their life.
