Mughals & City qualify for semis
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, March 3
Former league champions Nivia-Mughals Club defeated Shahdara Club 3-0 to top Group A Super League and qualify for the semi-final of the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA)-SAIL Senior Division Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital on Sunday.

In Group A, Mughals, Hindustan and Indian Air Force (New Delhi) finished with ten points each from five matches. However, Mughals and Hindustan qualified for the semi-finals on better goal difference, and edged out Indian Air Force from the fray.

Mughals have eight goals in favour and two against while Hindustan have six goals in favour and two against. Air Force had only four goals in favour and two against. In another match, City Club defeated defending champions SAIL-Indian Nationals 2-0.

In the first match, after a barren initial half, Mughals scored the first goal in the 50th minute through captain Rajesh Arya while striker Sunil Kumar made it 2-0 in the 65th minute. Rajesh Arya completed the tally (3-0) in the 70th minute. Shahdara could collect only three points from five matches.

In the second match, City Club forged ahead by ‘default’ when Nationals’ defender Ran Vijay Singh gave way for the first goal to be scored, and a defensive lapse led to Nageshwar Rao striking the second goal for Nationals.

The League Sub-Committee has taken a “serious view” of the match, and City Club too has convened a meeting to “take stock of the situation”.

The defeat made no difference to Nationals, as they along with City have qualified for the semi-finals.

The dates of the semi-finals and the final will be decided later.

Some clubs had been voicing complaints that matches were ‘fixed’ to favour certain clubs and in the process, the sufferers were clubs like Indian Air Force and others. An official complained that some clubs entered into an ‘understanding’ among themselves to protect the interest of each other.

Monday’s fixtures: National Football League Second Division: ASEB Sports Club, Assam vs Hindustan Club (1.30 pm); Jorba Durga (Orissa) vs Uttar Pradesh Police (3.30 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium.
