Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 2
A seminar on ‘Roadside accidents and trauma: role of the medical profession and police’ was held at the IMA complex here today.

Organised by the IMA, Chandigarh State Branch, the seminar focused on the role of a policeman and a doctor in reducing the stress and trauma after a roadside accident.

Speaking on the occasion, the SP (Operations), Mr H.G.S. Dhaliwal said that the day was not far when every person who was not taking up his or her responsibility during an accident situation would be dealt with strictly.

The Chandigarh police has set a precedent when it comes to registration of a negligence case against a doctor.

Answering questions of the various IMA members present at the seminar, Mr Dhaliwal stated that the Chandigarh police has one of the most efficient relief systems in the city.

Professor Jatin Vig of the PGI spoke on the incidents of trauma in road accidents. Giving figures he said India topped the list of countries as far as the number of road accidents were concerned.

SPORTS ROUND-UP
Shooting meet raises hopes
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, March 2
The past week saw many sports activities in various disciplines along with annual athletics meet of various colleges in the city. It also had in store some disappointment when city hockey fans got a shock due to the poor show by the Indian senior hockey men in the ongoing World Cup Hockey Meet at (Kuala Lumpur).

Boost to shooting

The just-concluded Northern India Shooting Meet at the Sector 25 shooting range, organised by newly formed Zonal Shooting Academy, has once again generated hope for local shooters. During the past few years, the shooting infrastructure could not be developed since the UT Sports Department never took special interest to promote the sport though various tournaments were organised by either the Chandigarh Rifle Association or the City Shooters Club. Only a few months ago, this shooting range was handed over to the Chandigarh Police for better management.

The recent holding of the shooting meet, where more than 200 shooters from the country took part, was a nice step to promote this sport. It was ironical that the air weapon shooters still have to practise and shoot in the open range. This certainly hampered the scores of an individual air weapons shooter. In the recent past, it has been seen that the upcoming shooters with good financial backing have made their own ranges in their respective homes. But what about other budding shooters who cannot afford and want to learn fundamentals of the sport. It will be better if the ‘zonal shooting academy’, which has taken the task to promote this otherwise expensive sport, also tries to work on these lines to collect funds to modify the range into an air conditioned one.

Sports meet for employees

The city was also host to two sports meet in tennis for policepersons and cricket for the Food Corporation of India. While tennis meet ended on Saturday, cricket will continue for another two days. The CLTA Stadium, Sector 10, was the hub of activity during the days where the All-India Police meet was held.

The cricket meet of FCI also was being organised with fanfare and it was nice to see Test stars such as Ajay Ratra of North Zone team. Next we have, employees tournament on a grand scale with the All-India Central Revenue sports meet from March 7, which will have more than 500 employees both from the Income Tax and Customs and Central Excise departments.
