Himanshu Kala bags Inter-Bank TT title

New Delhi, February 24
Himanshu P Kala of Central Bank of India annexed the men’s singles title when he beat Vineet Kumar of State Bank of Patiala (SBOP) in the final at 11-6,11-6, 11-8, 11-7 in the table tennis tournament of the eighth Inter-Bank (Northern Region) Sports Meet at the Karnail Singh Stadium in the Capital on Sunday.

In the men’s doubles title clash, Vineet Chopra and Dupinder Singh of SBOP beat Jagat Singh Bist and D S Rawat of Central Bank of India 11-7, 11-6, 11-8.

In badminton, Rudra Kaushik of Reserve Bank of India downed compatriot K G Saxena at 7-2,2-7,7-2,7-5 to win the men’s singles title. Rudra Kaushik then joined hands with K G Saxena to annex the doubles crown, beating Sudhakar Sharma and P Madan of Punjab National Bank 7-2, 7-1, 7-0. Dena Bank won the cricket crown defeating State Bank of Patiala by six wickets.

Scores: State Bank of Patiala: 219 for 9 (Rakesh Rehni 81, Pankaj Dharmani 39, Vikas Vij 4/36). Dena Bank: 220 for 4 (Sanjay Sharma 90, Aditya Jain 75 n o).

Sanjay Sharma of Dena Bank was declared the best batsman while Vikash Vij of the same bank got the best bowler award. Jai Singh Bist of Canara Bank was declared the best all-rounder of the tournament. Harinder Singh of RBI beat T K Sarkar of Punjab National Bank 25-0,25-19 to win the men’s singles carrom title. Harinder Singh made it a ‘double’ when he partnered Vijay Sharma to beat T K Sarkar and Tanuj Gupta of PNB 25-24, 25-16 in the men’s doubles final.

Oriental Bank of Commerce beat Bank of India 2-1 in the last league match of the football tournament. Dharmendra scored both the goals for Oriental Bank while Sanjay scored the consolation goal for Bank of India.

Jammu and Kashmir Bank were declared the winners of the football title as they had won four matches and drew one in the round-robin league.

In chess, Moti Ram of State Bank of Patiala emerged the title winner scoring six points out maximum possible seven points. Pawan Gupta of Punjab National Bank secured the second position with 5.5 points while M D Kaushik of RBI was declared third on five points. Raminder Bir Singh of State Bank of Patiala logged 4.5 points to finish fourth.

State Bank of Patiala with 10.5 points won the team championship followed by Punjab National Bank, who secured nine points. Mr S K Purkyastha, Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Finance, gave away the prizes. Mr B D Narang, Chairman and Managing Director of Oriental Bank of Commerce, and president of the Banks’ Sports Board, along with senior officials of other banks, were also present on the occasion as the weeklong Banks sports festival ended in a blaze of glory.

Nationals struggle to tame Garhwal Heroes in League

New Delhi, February 24
Defending champions SAIL-Indian Nationals had to sweat it out to tame a spirited Garhwal Heroes by a solitary goal in a Group B Super League match of the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA)-SAIL Senior Division Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital on Sunday.

In other Group B matches, Karims-City Club eclipsed Moonlight Club 2-0 while Frontiers stunned Tarun Sangha 2-1.

In the first match, Indian Nationals, after toiling without any gain in the first half, finally got the rewards on resumption when outside-right Sachin connected a well-measured pass from the left flank by Adams Monday, which grazed the hands of Garhwal Heroes’ custodian Kiran Barua before going in (1-0).

Nationals have taken their points tally to nine from three matches. In the second match, City Club also maintained their unbeaten record when they beat Moonlight Club by a brace. Irfan Khan drew first blood in the 13th minute while Sunil Chetri completed the scoring in the 43rd minute (2-0). Moonlight have secured just one point from three matches. In the last match, Frontiers Club hit back from a goal in arrear to beat Tarun Sangha. Inside-left Debasish Das put Tarun Sangha in the lead in the 60th minute while Frontiers’ captain Balvinder Raj restored parity (1-1) when he converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Ramesh scored the match-winner in the 80th minute.

Monday’s fixtures: N D Heroes vs Delhi Police (1.30 p m); IAF vs Hindustan (3.30 p m)—Ambedkar Stadium.

Varun, Hemant star for Delhi Club

Deadly bowling by Varun Tyagi (5/19) and a quick-fire unbeaten 55 by Hemant Nadar helped Delhi Club beat Alpine Club by eight wickets in an A-II Division match of the DDCA League at the Yamuna Sports Complex.

Scores: Alpine: 111 all out in 29 overs (Nirmal Kumar 37, Varun Tyagi 5/19, Jitender Chaudhary 3/10). Delhi Club: 112 for 2 in 16.1 overs (Hemant Nadar 55 n o, Jagat Pal Gaur 43, R D Singh 1/20).

Young Delhi Club beat Indo Club by two wickets in a ‘B’ Division match at Kotla No II. Scores: Indo Club: 239 for 9 in 40 overs (Amrish 31, Parul 29, Rama Shankar 4/47, Lokesh Jain 2/35, Sanjay Kumar 2/45). Young Delhi: 240 for 8 in 37.2 overs (Ramashankar 73 n o, Shanti Prakash 68, Puneet Berry 32, Dalbir Singh 2/49). Delhi Blues beat Century Club by four wickets in an A-I Division match at Yamuna Sports Complex. Scores: Century Club: 97 all out in 20.4 overs (Naveen Kumar 29, Mukesh Deewan 3/19, Himanshu Manik 2/18, Sachin Jain 2/04). Delhi Blues: 98 for 6 in 23.3 overs (Nitin Goel 44 n o, Rajeev Punj 4/27).

Sunil, Gaurav help TYCA win

A brilliant unbeaten 93 by Sunil Kashyap and a deadly bowling spell of 3 for 29 by Gaurav Malhotra helped Trans-Yamuna Cricket Association (TYCA) defeat Bright Club by six runs and enter the quarter-final of the second Rajdhani Sports Cricket Tournament, sponsored by Reebok, at the Kalindi College ground. Sunil Kashyap was adjudged the man of the match. Sanjay Arora of Reebok India inaugurated the tournament.

Scores: TYCA: 223 for 8 in 40 overs (Sunil Kashyap 93 n o, Paras Dogra 47, Ajay Nagia 25, Netarpal 3/37, Raj Kapoor 3/51). Bright Club: 217 all out in 39.5 overs (Atul Malhotra 48, Sanjeev Saini 24, Ajay Nagia 4/20, Gaurav Malhotra 3/29).

Rohtak XI enter final

A fine knock of 39 by Haryana Ranji player Joginder Sharma and a stunning 3/16 spell by off-spinner Gaurav Vashisth helped Rohtak XI defeat Neeraj Academy by six wickets and enter the final of the fourth All-India Meham Cricket Tournament at the Amirchand Sports Complex. Joginder received the man of the match award. Scores: NCA: 104 all out in 23.5 overs (Bhuvnesh Sharma 20, Kuldeep Deewan 19, Gaurav Vashisth 3/16). Rohtak XI: 106 for 4 in 18.1 overs (Joginder Sharma 39, Ashok Kumar 34, Kuldeep Deewan 2/34). OC
