PGI to organise diabetes mela

Chandigarh, February 21
The Department of Endocrinology of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research here will organise a two-day "Diabetes mela" to educate the public about the available ways and means to control the menace of diabetes which contributes menacingly to a large number of deaths worldwide. The Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Mr Suraj Bhan, will inaugurate an academic and diagnostic programme at the Bhargava Auditorium of the Institute on Saturday morning.

Subsequently, the department headed by Prof R.J. Dash, will receive patients and give them expert advice on the management of diabetes of various grades.

There will be educative demonstrations and slide shows, besides the free distribution of helpful printed material, including diet charts and medical literature on the theme.

Panchkula chemists’ strike tomorrow

Panchkula, February 21
The District Chemist Association today decided to go on a day-long strike on February 23, in protest against the action of the District Drug Inspector, Mr Deepak Puri, towards the chemist fraternity of Panchkula. All drug stores in the district will remain closed on February 23.

This decision was taken at a meeting of the District Chemist Association held here today. The chemists said that they had been unduly harassed by the inspector. They demanded that the administration take action against him at the earliest.

Sports day

Chandigarh
The annual sports day of the Food Craft Institute, Sector 42, was held today at Sector 46 Sports Complex which was inaugurated by Mr Alok Shivpuri, principal of the institute. Paras Kalhan secured first place in 100 metres and 200 metres section. In the girls section, Mandeep Kaur bagged first place.

Boys of the Cookery Department clinched first place in relay race. Barjinder got first place in shot put while Manpreet won top honours in girls section. Barjinder also claimed first place in discus throw while Mandeep among girls section. Paras was able to bag honours in long jump while in the high jump section, Tenzin got first place.

Mohali MC selects new site for dump

SAS Nagar, February 21
To overcome the crisis over dumping of garbage generated from the town, a site near Balliali village was today finalised by a committee constituting of officials from PUDA, the SAS Nagar civic body, the Ropar administration and the Punjab Pollution Control Board.

The site, at the south-west end of the town, was located behind the Industrial Area, Phase VIII, said an official of the local civic body. The committee members visited the site before agreeing upon it. Sources in PUDA said a revenue official would tomorrow demarcate the land as it was falling in the shamlat land of the village.

Mr Kulwant Singh, President of the civic body, said efforts would be made to acquire at least 20 acres of the low lying site so that the dumping of garbage could begin. He said the civic body had stopped dumping garbage at the site in Sector 66 after the residents of the area protested.

No substantial hike in civic body budget

No substantial hike is proposed in the forthcoming budget of the SAS Nagar Municipal Council for the fiscal year 2002-2003. The budget is likely to be placed before the General House for approval in the first week of March.

Sources in the civic body said after the abolition of octroi and the state government sanctioning funds, earned by the civic body in the corresponding month in 2000, the officials were in a quandary about the proposed income for the next financial year. The projected receipt for the financial year 2001-2002 was Rs 20.35 crore. Of this, Rs 17.60 crore was from octroi collection.

It was being proposed that the receipts from April 2000 to November 2001, till the date when the octroi was abolished, would be taken into account. For the remaining period, a 10 per cent hike would be proposed.
