Mughals win in League New Delhi, February 20 In a Group B match, another former champions, City Club, defeated Frontiers Club 2-0, to register their second victory, and log six points. Frontiers suffered their second successive defeat. City scored both the goals in the first half. Mid-fielder Irfan Khan scored the first goal with a 20-yard shot to catch the rival cusodian, Dipu Lama (1-0), off guard in the 38th minute, and two minutes later nippy Bhupender Sharma set up a nice cross from the right flank for forward Nageshwar Rao to head home (2-0). In the second half, both the teams indulged in pedestrian soccer, and meaningful moves were few and far between. Once Frontiers’ veteran captain Balvinder Raj’s long-ranger threatened to breach the rival goal, but custodian Vijay Gupta rose to the occasion admirably to bring off a fine save. In the first match, Mughals always held the upper hand as medios Manjeev Kumar and Ram Singh initiated good moves for forwards Asim Paul Ekka, Sunil Kumar and Rajesh Arya to make use. After a barren first half, Sunil Kumar scored the first goal in the 65th minute (1-0) when he dodged past rival defenders SheikhAmir and H.S.Minhas to put the ball in. Midfielder Ram Singh scored the second goal. Delhi Police vs Shahdara (1 pm); Hindustan vs N D Heroes (3 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium. |

Anti-encroachment drive helps reduce accidents Sonepat, February 20 The present Deputy Commissioner has started a vigorous campaign to get the public land evacuated from the unauthorised occupants and removed the traffic hazards in various parts of the city, particularly in the thickly populated areas. Thus, land worth several crores of rupees has been vacated and many roads as well as main crossings have been widened and beautified to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. For instance, Subhash Chowk in the Model Town area has got a new look with the construction of dividers. Similarly at Mamoon Bhanja Chowk near the bus stand, the traffic hazards have been totally removed by widening the roads around them. In the most accident-prone area near the local Hindu College and the railway crossing, the number of accidents has come down drastically with the widening of roads and shifting of the boundary wall of the railway yard. This road connects the grain market and various educational institutions via Mission Chowk which has also been widened by shifting the premises of a religious temple to another place. The area in and around Mission Chowk has also been given a face-lift and it has become a place of attraction for the people, particularly for the students of nearby educational institutions. Similarly, the entrance to the city from Rohtak side near Kalupur village has also been beautified by removing encroachments and the dirt which used to pile up there. |
