Workshop on human growth

A two-day national workshop on ‘Human Growth and Development’ organised by the Department of Anthropology started at Panjab University here today. Inaugurating the workshop, the chief guest, Prof R.J. Hans Gill, DUI, lauded significant contributions made by the department’s faculty in human growth and development. Prof J.C. Sharma presided over the inaugural session of the workshop. Earlier Prof R.N. Vashisht, Head of the department, welcomed the guests.

DAV Model School-15 student excels

DAV Model School, Sector 15 has laid equal stress on academic as well as sports. The school, spread over an area of four acres, has a large playground and an imposing building and other amenities and the students are encouraged to utilise these. The notable achievements of students of the school in the fields of academics and sports in the recent past have been noticed and appreciated by one and all.

According to Ms Rakesh Sachdeva, Principal, the school has produced several national level sportspersons — Harminder Singh, a basketball player of national fame has brought laurels to the sports wing. He was selected for the India’s basketball team and was first in CBSE under-17 in 1998. He has been declared winner in Oil SARC Senior International Tournament held in Guwahati. In Federation Cup of Punjab Police, Jharkhand and 31st National Games held in Punjab where he was declared the best basketball player in 2001.

Guneet Raikhy is an active golfer. In the year 2000-2001 she was selected in the national team. Yuvraj Choudhary, another student of the school doned colours in the All-India Junior Tennis ranking tournament held in Sector-10 Chandigarh, and was placed in 2nd seed in the junior group. He also won a scholarship of Rs 3000 in under-14 tournaments held at the Lake Club.

The school participated in the All-India Mahatma Hans Raj Aryan tournament in 2001 in which the girls’ basketball team secured first place at the national level and the volleyball team was placed in the second position at national level. Previously also the boy’s team had bagged national level trophy in basketball and girls’ in handball event. Om Bahadur and Mohit in 2000 and Ashish and Mohit in 2001 were adjudged best basketball players in under-17 group.

Ms Sachdeva said adventure camps, rock climbing, trekking and other activities are organised during vacation time as these help in character development, inculcate leadership qualities and spirit of competition, among students.

Ms Sachdeva told that her future plans include the development of land adjacent to school into playground. Mr Pawan Bansal, MP, has donated Rs 3 lakh for this.

State handball championship begins

Chandigarh, February 20
DAV School club-B and DAV School club-A outclassed their rivals Coaching Centre, Sector 42-A and CC-42B 18-4 and 38-35, respectively, on the opening day of the 22nd Chandigarh Senior State Handball Championship here today at the DAV Senior Secondary School, sector 8. In another tie of the day, Coaching Centre-21 defeated Government Model Senior Secondary school, Sector 19 20-15 (half time10-8).

Scores: first match - DAV Club-B beat CC-42 A 18-4 (half time-12-3). Winners —Shiv Dayal 11, Lakhan-3, Parduman-2. Losers — Gurpeet-two, Rohit and Varinder-one goal each.

IInd match- DAV club A beat CC 42-B 38-35 (half time 20-19). Winners — Sanjay-13,Vicky-8, Sachin-7, Narinder-5. Losers — Devinder negi 17, Rakesh-7 and Shaminder-6.

IIIrd match: CC-21 beat GMSSS-19 20-15. Winners — Ramesh Jain-7, Hardeep 5. Losers — Deepak-4 and Abhimanyu-3.

Sports day

The two-day annual sports day of the local MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, will begin here tomorrow on the college premises. The meet will be inaugurated by Mr R.S. Gujral, and Home Secretary UT, tomorrow at 10.30 am followed by annual prize distribution function.

Annual sports day

The Food Craft Institute, Sector 42 will hold its annual sports day tomorrow at Sports Complex, Sector 42. The events will be held from 9 am to 2 pm and the events include discus throw, shotput, long jump, high jump,100 and 200 mts race, relay races and tug of war beside fun games.

Director Sports welcomed

The sports fraternity of Patiala joined hands to give a rousing welcome to the newly-appointed Director Sports, Punjab, Padam Shri Kartar Singh, last evening at a simple but impressive function held at Garden Resort, Patiala. The two-hour long function was organised by Mr P.S. Chhabra, Secretary-General of the School Games Federation of India.

Prof Balbir Singh, was among others who spoke on the occasion. Others present on the occasion included Mr Vinod Vatrana, former International badminton player, Mr J.S. Bahia, secretary of the Punjab Cycle Polo Association, leading orthopaedician Dr J.S. Walia, among others.

Black belt degrees

The Shaolin Shotokan Karate -do-Federation, a body for the promotion of professional Shotokan karate-do in the city, recently conferred professional degrees of black belt of Shotokan karate- do to karata-kas of St Stephen’s High School and YMCA, Sector 11. Ritesh Kerawal, Karan Karewel, Chivijit Singh, Arjun Singh and Alakh, Piyush Makkar, all from St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, received their black belt degree. In the girl’s section, Tanu Priya Gupta and Abhishek Sahai were awarded their black belt ni-dan and yon-dan degrees, respectively. A professional multi-display was also performed.

Athletics meet

The 126th annual athletics meet of Government Mohindra College was today declared open by the Director of Sports, Punjab, Mr Kartar Singh.

He exhorted the students to take up sports.

PUDA gears up for anti-encroachment drive

The Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) is once again gearing up to launch an anti-encroachment drive against the unuathorised construction going on in the periphery. It is learnt that the officials of the authority have taken note of the unauthorised construction activity in progress in Naya Goan and other peripheral areas.

A case in this regard too is pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Chief Administrator of PUDA, Mr K.B.S Sidhu, said demolition would be done after following the proper procedure.

Meanwhile, the demolition staff of the local Estate Office yesterday demolished at least 30 unauthorised structures in front of social housing in Phase 1 here. The HE quarters were, however, spares as some clarification from the architect had been sought. The drive would continue tomorrow in Phase 2. Earlier the demolition squad had removed unauthorised structures from Industrial Area, Phase 1,2,3 and 4.

Vigilance committee reconstituted

The UT Administration has reconstituted the District Vigilance Committee headed by the District Magistrate for the UT.

The members of the committee are: Mr K.C. Shanmar, former IG (Prisons), Mr Kewal Krishan Adiwal, former city Mayor, Mr Amarnath Sarhadi, Ms Surya Pandit, Mr Mam Raj Mittal of Sewa Bharti, a representative of regional branch of Punjab National Bank, the Tehsildar, the Block Development and Panchayat Officer and the Sub-divisional Magistrate (Central). The term of the committee will be for two years.

Repair of Sector 25 road begins

Chandigarh, February 20
The UT Engineering Department has started repairing the approach road to the Government Girls High School and Government Middle School, housed in same building, in Sector 25 here.

Students and staff of the school had to face problems in reaching the school during rainy season.

Chandigarh Tribune had highlighted the plight of the students in its columns. Sources in the Engineering Department said storm water from the nearby colony had gradually damaged the road.

The road from Sector 25 gate to the school premises is being repaired and the work is expected to be completed soon.
