Health employees call off strike

Ludhiana, February 19
Members of the Punjab Health Department Subordinate Offices Clerical Association (PHDSOCA) called off their dharna after getting assurance from the Deputy Commissioner for the cancellation of transfer orders the district president Sukhwinder Singh.

It may be mentioned that the members were on a dharna in protest against the transfer of the association president to Patiala on the instructions of the Election Commission. The transfer was done by the Director, Health Services, Punjab. There were allegations that Sukhwinder Singh had been canvassing for one of the candidates in the recent assembly elections.

Ground ready for North vs East

Ludhiana, February 19
Preparations for the February 22 Deodhar Trophy cricket tie between North Zone and East Zone hosted by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) are complete.

The match is to be held on the Punjab Agricultural University grounds here.

The facilities at the venue are according to the specifications of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Dressing rooms have been built, and the ground has been barricaded.

Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary of the LDCA, said the wicket had been prepared under the guidance of Daljit Singh, chief coach of the Punjab Cricket Association.

A number of players who have donned the India cap will play in this match. They include Yuveraj Singh, Vikram Rathore, Virender Sehwag, Ajay Ratra, Ashish Nehra and Dinesh Mongia of the North Zone, besides Debashish Mohanty, Deep Dasgupta and Rohan Gavaskar of the East Zone.

Mr Chitkara said, though there would be no entry fee for the match, the association had released donor cards to raise funds for the match.

This is a benefit match of a former Punjab cricketer Arun Sharma, who holds a national record in wicketkeeping.

The LDCA will also host a dinner on the eve of the match on February 21 here, where Kapil Dev, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Yash Pal Sharma, Mr I.J.S. Bindra, a former BCCI chief, and Mr M.P. Pandove, general secretary of the PCA, will be felicitated. Mr Bindra will inaugurate the match on Friday at 9 am.

Athletics meet

The 33rd Annual Athletics Meet of the local SDP College for Women will be held on February 20 on the college campus, according to a press note issued here today by Ms S. Verma, Principal of the college.

Mr J.R. Devgan, General Manager of the State Bank of Patiala, will give away prizes to winners.

The annual athletics meet of the local Malwa Central College of Education for Women will be held on February 21, according to a press note issued here today by Dr Ravinder Kaur, Principal of the college.

Mr R.L. Kalsia, Municipal Commissioner of Ludhiana, will be the chief guest at the prize-distribution function.

Khanna: The 50th annual athletics meet of AS College, Khanna, will be organised in the Madan Gopal Chopra Memorial Stadium on February 21 and 22.

The meet will be inaugurated by Mr Yoginder Sharma, president, AS High School Khanna-Trust and Management Society.

Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, MP, will preside over the prize distribution function on February 22.

Some outstanding sportsmen of yesteryears would also be honoured on the occasion, said Principal Tarsem Bahia.
