J&K gears up for Lok Sabha poll Jammu, February 19 More than 347 polling stations, have been declared hyper-sensitive and placed under heavy security cover to ensure free and fair polling. This was stated by the Chief Electoral Officer, Mr Pramod Jain, at a news conference in presence of the Divisional Commissioner, Mr Anil Goswami, and the Inspector- General of Police, Mr P.L. Gupta, here today. Mr Jain said more than 25,000 voters belonging to those villages which had been deserted in the wake of Pakistan shelling had been enrolled at various polling stations which had been set up close to their places of migration. In addition to this polling stations have been set up in 95 per cent of school buildings. Wherever the troops have expressed their inability to vacate the school premises, make shift polling stations have been established in tents. He said three observers appointed by the Chief Election Commission have been touring various segments of the constituency to ensure that no party or individual violated the code of conduct. He further said whenever reports on violation of such a code were received action was taken immediately. He said the commission had probed the Congress allegation that Mrs Sonia Gandhi was not allowed to visit on security reasons by the state government and it was found incorrect. Mr Jain said counting would start on February 24. Meanwhile, the three-week long peaceful electioneering came to an end today with various contesting parties making a last-minute bid to woo voters. While the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, headed the campaign parties for the National Conference candidate, Mr Talib Hussain, his efforts were supplemented by his son Omar Abdullah and a caravan of state minister. The Congress candidate, Mr Madan Lal Sharma, was assisted in his campaign by Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mr Sat Mahajan and Mr Satyajit Gaekward. The BJP candidate, Mr Nirmal Singh was supported by Prof Chamal Lal Gupta, Union Minister for Food Processing, Mr O.P. Kohli, in charge BJP affairs, Jammu and Kashmir. |
Brigadier joins as Col Commandant Jammu, February 19 An alumnus of National Defence Academy, Brigadier Kapur was commissioned in the Army in June, 1969. He has held various important posts, including Director Perspective Planning and Brigadier General Stall Intelligence, Western Command. He had commanded a key intelligence unit in the Northern sector that was awarded the Army Chief’s citation. He has become the first serving Brigadier to take over as Colonel Commandant. |

2 killed as bus falls into gorge
Srinagar, February 19 Official sources said the bus, on way from Buzgaha to Srinagar, fell into a gorge at Humpora near Chadoora, about 20 km from here, today. Farooq Ahmad and Mohammad Afzal were killed on the spot. The injured have been admitted to hospitals here. UNI |
2 die in IED blast Jammu, February 19 Official reports said a BSF patrol party was on a mission to track down militants. The IED exploded when the patrol party crossed the road strip. The injured were admitted to hospital. Massive search operations have been launched to nab the culprits. |
