Tribune News Service

Panchkula, February 18
The District Chemists Association has threatened to go on a strike if the State Drug Controller failed to take any action against District Drug Inspector Deepak Puri.

In a statement issued to the Press, Mr B.B. Singhal and Mr Sanjiv Goyal, president and general secretary, respectively, of the association, said they met the State Drug Controller today and submitted a memorandum to him. They demanded that Puri should be suspended and a criminal case be registered against him.

This sportsperson holds lot of promise
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, February 18
She is a sportsperson who could prove her worth at last. Life for the 17-year-old Hardeep Kaur has not been all that easy to hit the bull’s eye.

A native of Jalaldiwal village (Raikot) in Punjab, Hardeep hit the headlines with her brilliant performance in the shot-put event.

Hardeep is now a trainee at the local Sports Authority of India, Sports Training Centre, Sector 18. Hardeep, who was selected for this centre only last year, said prior to shifting to Chandigarh, she studied at Raikot. With no qualified athletics coach, she had to struggle hard to live up to the expectations. She feels very happy now as she is in the safe hands of senior SAI athletics coach, Jasbir Singh, at the centre. Jasbir has been a player of repute. So his guidance and training will be of tremendous help to budding sportspersons like her, Hardeep says.

A student of First year BA at Guru Gobind Singh College for Women in Sector 26, Hardeep praised her college for having given a boost to sportspersons. She said her college is spending over Rs 17,000 per annum on her sports activities.

Hardeep took to shotput at the age of 12 after being inspired by her father. Only a few months back, she stood third in the Junior National Athletic championships held at Chennai. Her record was 10.51 metres. The same distance was maintained during the All India Inter Zone Athletics Meet at Kanpur where too she occupied the same position.

Hardeep, who aims to don international colours in shotput, said at the school level also, she took part in the National School Games several times in different age groups. In the state schools athletic meet, she stood first with a distance of 10.74 metres. However, the absence of a trained coach hampered her performance to some extent, she says.

In the Panjab University Inter College Athletics Meet, she clinched third place this session by throwing at 10.63 metres. She said in the camps, she had watched the video-clippings of renowned shotputters like Shakti Singh, Bahadur Singh and others, which helped and motivated her to do well. She was of the view that regular training under an expert coach was very much essential. In sports, if one does hard work with sincerity and earnestness, one can achieve the goal, she says.

For a shotputter, weight training was very essential along with a balanced diet. This area gives rise to stress, she says. The facilities being extended at the STC-18 were commendable. In this context, she is all praise for the Assistant Director, SAI, Mr Ritu Pathik who treats the inmates the “friends”, she maintains.

Hardeep, who had played for Punjab earlier, now plans to represent Chandigarh in the forthcoming tournaments at the national level.

MCC proposes 11.6 cr for Kajauli waterworks
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 18
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) has proposed allocation of Rs 11.6 crore for the Kajauli waterworks, Phase 4, a Rs 2-crore for new sewage plant and Rs 2 crore for councillors’ fund in the Budget for 2002-2003 that proposes Rs 15 crore collection from property tax.

The proposal shows an increase of around Rs 10 crore over the last year provisions with 2002-2003 amount going to Rs 161.33 crore against Rs 151.78 crore last year.

However, the development money in this year has been reduced to Rs 45.56 crore against last year’s provisions of Rs 46.6 crore.

Almost the whole increase in the Budget outlay has gone on the non-plan account that has gone to Rs 115.77 crore against Rs 105.72 crore of the last year.

The corporation has again failed to impose an acceptable tax proposals to bring it out of a financial mess and provide world-class amenities pegging its resources of Rs 15 crore on the property tax that seems unlikely to be accepted by the Congress and other parties.

The corporation, however, expects to get Rs 36 crore as grant-in-aid from the Chandigarh Administration for development against last year’s allocation of Rs 23.75 crore. The non-plan grant-in-aid seems to have been frozen with allocation of Rs 50 crore being the same as that of the last year.

The MCC proposes to spend Rs 3.5 crore on a new fire-tender for multi-storeyed buildings, Rs 3.8 crore only on improving the condition of vast network of roads, Rs 2 crore on improvement of water supply and tubewells, Rs 1.11 crore on management of dumping grounds and Rs 1 crore on green belts and fragrance garden.

The Budget has made Rs 2 crore provision for the councillors’ fund also for the first time this year. The corporation expects to collect Rs 27.7 crore from water charges, Rs 2 crore from sewage cess, Rs 24 crore from estate receipts and Rs 15 crore from property.

Rest of the receipts are likely to fetch Rs 8.35 crore.
