Toothbrush removed from stomach
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 16
Mr Anil Kumar, a mentally-challenged male residing in the city, was operated upon at a private nursing home in Sector 21 for the removal of a toothbrush, which he had accidentally swallowed a week back.

The patient and his family had been moving from one clinic to the other and were referred to Hope Clinics by a samaritan. Yesterday, an endoscopy was performed on him, which showed the toothbrush lying in the stomach with some part of its length in the intestine.

Dr Nagpal, Dr N.S. Sandhu and Dr Harish Gupta treated the patient, which took about 3 hours. Dr Nagpal said though he had removed many foreign bodies in his career using other techniques, it was one of the very few times when surgical assistance was needed. Team effort is needed to tackle such problems, he said. Dr Nagpal said patients were occasionally brought to him where attempt to remove the object had already been made outside.

Dr Nagpal said the most common foreign body removed endoscopically by him were coins (at times more than one). He has removed virtually everything like pins, sewing needles, nails, screws, dentures, datoon, batteries, lockets, gold rings, plastic toys, chicken bones etc.
