Faridabad gets first private heart institute

Faridabad, February 15
The private sector has definitely taken a lead in providing latest medical and health service facilities to residents of this town, which has the largest population in Haryana, of course at a cost. The latest is the first modern heart institute of its kind in the town called Metro Heart Institute at Sector 16-A. It is set up by the Metro Group of Hospitals. The doctors of the institute performed the first case of coronary angiography today.

The Director of the institute, Dr S. S. Bansal, said that its mission was to provide cardiograph treatment and facilities to middle class and low-income group patients. He said while the number of heart patients had been growing even among the economically weaker sections of the society, there was no advanced heart treatment facility available throughout the state. Jindal Steel sail past South Delhi in Scindia Polo

Jindal Steel and Power beat South Delhi by four goals to one and a half, McDowell Signatures beat Indian Navy by 13 goals to 5, Teachers beat Piramal

Enterprises by 6-5 and Hyundai Sonata beat Army (Green) by ten goals to five and half in the quarter-final matches of the Maharaja Scindia Gold Cup (12 goals) Polo Tournament in the Capital on Friday.

The match between Jindal Steel and Power and South Delhi, played at the Army Equestrian Centre Polo ground, turned out to be a one-sided affair as South Delhi missed a lot of chances. South Delhi started with a half-goal handicap, and they scored their only goal through Phillip Elliot, while Jindal got their goals through Samir Suhag and Augustine Gracia, who scored two goals each.

The match between McDowell and Navy, played at the Jaipur Polo ground, was also a lop-sided affair in which Navy were a six-goal team, and started their match with a four-goal handicap. Lt. A P Singh, Shamsheer Ali (nine goals) and Maj

Adhiraj Singh (four goals) were the marksmen for the winners.

The match between Teachers and Piramal was a close affair, as both the teams were 12-goal teams, and displayed good horsemanship. The last match between Hyundai Sonata and Army was also a close affair. Hyundai tilted the match in their favour with a four-goal blitz in the fourth and final chukker.

Saturday’s fixtures: Jindal Steel and Power vs McDowell Signatures (2 pm); Hyundai Sonata vs Teachers (3 pm)— Jaipur Polo ground.

Top teams for Davinder Singh Cricket Tournament

New Delhi, February 15
Sixteen top teams, including two outstation ones, will participate in the 11th All-India Davinder Singh Memorial Cricket Tournament for the Mrs Tara Devi Mathur Trophy, to be organised by Young Friends Club, from February 16 to March 10.

The tournament is being held in the memory of a promising player of Young Friends Cricket Club, Davinder Singh, whose life was snatched during the 1984 riots. At the age of 18 years, Davinder Singh had been adjudged as the best batsman of the DDCA Hot Weather Cricket Tournament, besides doing very well in the C K Nayudu Trophy for Under-22.

Organising Secretary of the tournament, R P Sharma, announced in the Capital on Friday that defending champions Goswamy Ganesh Dutt Cricket Club, runners-up Indian Airlines Corporation (IAC), and two outstation teams, ACC, Ratlam (Madhya Pradesh) and UCC, Haridwar (UP) are in the fray.

The teams have been divided into two groups of eight teams each. The matches will be played at the Harbaksh Singh Stadium, Delhi Cantonment and Air Force ground, Palam.

The teams are: Group A: G G Dutt, Indian Air Force, Collage Group, Lal Bahadur Shastri Club, K N Colts, Sonnet Club, ACC, Ratlam and UCC, Haridwar.

Group B: Indian Airlines, Delhi Development Authority, Trans-Yamuna Cricket Association, Subhania Club, Bright Club, Hotel Hill View (Faridabad), Pelican Club and R R Gymkhana.

Leander to appear on ESPN Star Sports

India’s tennis ace Leander Paes, fresh from his excellent performance for India in the Davis Cup tie against Lebanon in Beirut recently, will appear on Harsha Online in ESPN and Star Sports on February 18 (Monday) at 10.30 pm. Spectators can interact with Leander by dialling 9628-400-400.

ESPN Star Sports have pioneered the one-hour interactive programme. Leander Paes has been making news for more than a decade now after he won the coveted Junior Wimbledon singles title in 1990 and the US Open junior title the very next year. The year 1996 was a golden year for Indian tennis when Leander Paes inscribed India’s name on the Olympic bronze medal.

In 1999, partnering with Mahesh Bhupathi, Leander went on to win the doubles championships at two Grand Slam events — Wimbledon and the French Open. These achievements made them the number one doubles pair in the tennis world..

12 teams to compete for DSA-SAIL League title

New Delhi, February 15
Twelve reputed club teams of Delhi, including defending champions Indian Nationals and runners-up Hindustan Club, will vie for top honours in the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA)-SAIL Senior Division Super League Championship, beginning on February 17, at the Ambedkar Stadium.

Eighteen teams had competed in the preliminary league, which was completed on January 24, before the start of the Durand Cup. Four teams—Youngmen, Shastri and Collegians in Group A and Jat Heroes in Group B—had failed to turn up for their matches in the preliminary league. These teams were subsequently scratched from the tournament.

DSA joint-secretary N K Bhatia said former league champions Mughals Club will meet Delhi Police in the opening match of the Senior Division League on February 17 at the Ambedkar Stadium at 1 pm followed by a match between Indian Air Force (New Delhi) and New Delhi Heroes at 3 pm.

The top teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The final is slated to be played on March 11. The matches will be played under gates with tickets priced at Rs 5 each. There will be a daily draw on tickets and prizes like T-shirts and track-suits will be given to the winners. The prizes will be sponsored by Shiv Naresh.

Steel Authority of India Ltd is sponsoring the league for the sixth consecutive year. The co-sponsors will be Cosco. The groupings of the teams are: Group A: Delhi Police, Indian Air Force (New Delhi), Hindustan Club, Shahdara, N D Heroes and Mughals.

Group B: Indian Nationals, City Club, Tarun Sangha, Moonlight, Garhwal Heroes and Frontiers.

Chinese Taipei trounce India in Korfball

Hosts India suffered their second defeat when they were trounced by Chinese Taipei 23-13 on the penultimate day of the fifth Asian-Oceanian Korfball Championship at the Indira Gandhi indoor stadium in the Capital on Friday. India had lost to Australia on Thursday to suffer their first defeat in the championship. In another match, Hong Kong beat Japan 18-9. On Saturday, Japan will taken on Chinese Taipei (9.30 am), Chinese Taipei will play against Australia (2.30 pm) and India meet Hong Kong at 4 pm.

MEA to play golf

The Ministry of External Affairs will play against the Diplomatic Corps in the Diplomatic Corps Golf Tournament to be held at the Classic Golf Course, Gurgaon, on Saturday, February 16.

Rahul Kaira shines in HDFC’s victory

Rahul Kaira’s devastating 2 for 10 spell earned him the man of the match award as HDFC beat ICICI by 119 runs in the ninth Teri Cup Cricket Tournament, organised by Teri at the Central Secretariat ground in the Capital.

Scores: HDFC: 243 for 5 in 25 overs (Muskan Singh 97, 9x4, 4x6; Rahul Kaira 96, 16x4, 1x6; Gaurav Ahuja 2/29). ICICI: 124 in 20 overs (Ruchir Kapoor 33, 3x4; Prashant Sahu 28, 3x4; Ashish Tyagi 3/24, Rahul Kaira 2/10.
