The local administration has beefed up the security around the strong room created in the Government Degree College building, where 159 electronic voting machines have been kept.

To keep a round-the-clock vigil on the strong room, over 45 cops, including, one Sub Inspector, two Assistant Sub Inspectors, six Head Constables, 24 Constables and a company of the Rapid Action Police Force (RAPF) have been deployed till the counting of votes begins on February 24.

Apart from this, some firemen of the Fire Brigade have also been put on duty. Equipped with fire engines and other fire-fighting equipment, they have camped on the college campus.

Meanwhile, the college authorities complained that creating of the strong room and even the pre-election activities has affected studies of students.

The college Principal, Ms Manohar Kaur, said that she had approached Mr Pritam Singh Johal, SDM and the Returning Officer of the Banur Assembly constituency, for not setting up the strong room on the college campus as this would hinder teaching works.

The practical examinations of the annual academic session of classes XI and XII will start from February 18 and the college has insufficient rooms to conduct examinations as a portion of the college building has been occupied by the security staff.

Mr Pritam Singh Johal, when contacted, said that the college had sufficient space where practical examinations could be conducted. Moreover, the elections were equally important as the annual examinations of the students, he added.
