‘History
not meant for domestic consumption’ Chandigarh, February 14 Organised by the Department of Political Science, the lecture was titled ‘Writing alternative histories’ and was presided over by the PU Vice-Chancellor, Prof
K.N. Pathak. Professor Shahid Amin, an ardent believer of subaltern writing of history, is well known for his work on Chauri
Chaura. Prof Amin provided a critique of the dominant nationalist historiography by pointing out its various limitations in the writing of colonial history. He said the problem of this dominant nationalist history writing lies in the fact that it refuses to incorporate people’s histories within the all encompassing history writing if it seeks to contest the dominant understanding of any event. Calling himself a practitioner of history, he said the worth of any history would depend upon its ability to transcend national boundaries and reach out to a global audience and should not be meant only for domestic consumption. Earlier, Dr Pradeep Kumar of the Department of Political Science welcomed the guests while Dr Sanjay Chaturvedi proposed a vote of thanks. |
School celebrates Basant
Panchmi Panchkula, February 14 Children were excited when they were given a kite each by their teachers with a roll of string
(dor). Most of the children, who have been brought up in the "cartoon network" culture, saw a kite for the first time. For them, it was an exhilarating experience to make the kites fly. The students had brought yellow sweet rice generally associated with Basant. The staff was wearing yellow clothes and festivity was certainly in the air. Rama Vij, who had shot to fame in Punjabi film Chan Pardesi , said that she looked forward to good Punjabi films being made and the Punjabi film artistes being given due
recognition from the state government. She lamented that only a few persons were patronised by the Punjab government. Vij, who has worked in numerous Punjabi, Hindi and Bhojpuri films , lamented that most Punjabi videos were projecting nudity in the name of promoting Punjabi culture. |
