Ronak Pandit shoots six golds in Europe

New Delhi, February 12
Junior shooter Ronak Pandit shot six gold, two silver and three bronze medals in the recent tour of various cities in Europe like Luxembourg, Munich, Denmark and The Netherlands. Many top shooters from Europe had participated in these shooting meets.

Ronak Pandit’s performance was very commendable as he had taken to shooting seriously only two years ago. Olympian Anjali Vedpath has been in excellent form throughout the European circuit, in which 12 best shooters from India participated.

Anjali Ved Pathak claimed four gold, eight silver and one bronze medal. She had a dream score of 299/400 in the Air Rifle for women, which was equal to the world record, and also a new national record. She won the gold with a margin of 0.4 points after warding off tough challenge from Korea’s Kan-Cho Hyun.

Samresh Jung gave a good account of himself in the Air Pistol event as he shot 584/600, which is a new national record, though he got only a bronze medal, missing the silver by a more 0.4 points.

His total medal haul was two gold, four silver and two bronze medals. Ace shooter Abhinav Bindra had a tough competition in the Air Rifle event, though he lifted four gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

The Indian shooters, in all, struck 16 gold, 20 silver and nine bronze medals in the three-week European circuit, which was a remarkable performance by any yardstick.

Naman Khanna shines in Frank Anthony’s win

A brilliant all-round performance by Naman Khanna (4/26 and 72 not out), the Delhi Under-14 player, helped Frank Anthony Public School beat Madan Lal Academy by four wickets to lift the third R G Williams Memorial Cricket Tournament (Under-14) at the Frank Anthony School ground.

Naman Khanna was adjudged the man of the match, Aditya Saini was chosen as the best batsman of the tournament, Vivek Verma was named the best bowler, Varun Singh the best all-rounder and Prateek Pawar the best wicket-keeper.

Former Test player Gursharan Singh was the chief guest while principal of Frank Anthony School, S. Dacosta, presided over the concluding function. Scores: Madan Lal Academy: 205 for 5 in 40 overs (Atrey Raj Gopal 60, Anant Jai Singh 39, Rohan Sachdev 34 no and Naman Khanna 4/26). Frank Anthony School: 208 for 6 in 39.4 overs (Naman Khanna 72 no (42b, 4x4, 6x6), Rohan Tuteja 28, Ankit Maini 25, Ankur Rawat 25 no and Pratinav Kumar 2/19).

Exhibition soccer match

An exhibition football match between Mukti Ashram and World Team will be played at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital on Wednesday at 1.30 pm before the first semi-final match of the Durand Cup Football Tournament between Indian Telephone Industries, Bangalore and Mahindra United, Mumbai.

On February 14, an exhibition match between Indian National Veteran Team and Child Football Stitchers will be played before the second semi-final of the Durand Cup between East Bengal and Zee Churchill, Goa.

Sidharth, Tony star for Chand Khanna

An unbeaten knock of 50 runs by Sidharth Verma and deadly bowling of 3 for 20 by left-arm spinner Tony Singh helped Chand Khanna Club beat Ircon Club by seven wickets in a DDCA A-I Division League at the Yamuna Sports Complex.

Scores: Ircon: 102 in 28.2 overs (Surender Kumar 15, Tony Singh 3/28, Gautam Bhalla 2/11). Chand Khanna: 103 for 3 in 19.5 overs (Sidharth Verma 50 no, Pujan Ghosh 40 no, Onkar Singh 2/19).

At Kotla No 2, Paragon Club beat Pioneer Club by two wickets in an A-II division league. Pioneer Club: 268 in 37.5 overs (Ashok Lamba 121, Deepak Kumar 44, Baljinder Singh 4/65, Dalbir Singh 3/28, Amit Kanojia 2/42). Paragon: 271 for 8 in 39.4 overs (Rajesh Mahajan 81, Raj Pal 47, Brijesh Oberoi 28, Surender Nirwan 4/46, Vimal Raswant 3/47, Inderjeet Singh 2/39).

SB Youth beat Delhi Blues by 53 runs in an A-I Division League at the Yamuna Sports Ground. SRCC honours ex-students

The Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) honoured its distinguished alumni at the annual get-together in the Capital. The Alumni Association gives away the prestigious Alumni Awards to its old students who have excelled in their chosen field of activity, bringing glory to themselves and their alma mater.

The awards this year were given to Dr Rajan Saxena, director of Indian Institute of Management, Indore, Mr C. K. Khanna, vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Delhi and District Cricket Association, Mr R. M. Malla, executive director, IFCI and Mr Ravinder Jain, joint secretary (ports), in the Ministry of Shipping.

Some of the illustrious old students of SRCC are: Union Minister for Law, Justice and Company Affairs and president of the DDCA Arun Jaitley, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Vijay Goel, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi, film actor Gulshan Grover and Lalit Suri, chairman of Inter-Continental Hotel.

Rajeev helps Railways win

Rajeev Mahajan cracked an unbeaten 66 studded with ten fours and two sixes to help Railway Officers’ Cricket Association beat Royal Sundaram Alliance Insurance by nine wickets in the ninth Teri Cup Cricket Tournament at the Teri Oval, Gurgaon. Rajeev Mahajan was adjudged the man of the match. Scores: Royal Sundaram: 116 in 23.2 overs (Sangram Rawat 45, 2x4, 1x6; G. S Gill 2/17, Sunil Mathur 2/22).

DM orders demolition of Railways’ boundary wall

Sonepat, February 12
The District Magistrate of Sonepat, Mr S. N. Roy, has promulgated the ban orders under Section 144 of the CrPC authorising the Executive Officer of the Sonepat Municipal Council to demolish the boundary wall constructed by the Railway authorities along the Sonepat-Rohtak road from the railway crossing near Hindu College to the Lord Shiva temple at the Mission Chowk (about 1,000 feet long). The wall is in a bad shape and it is feared that it may collapse any moment and cause serious accidents.

According to official sources, the District Magistrate also directed the Executive Officer to take immediate steps for the construction of another wall near the present one on a safe alignment. While doing so, the Executive Officer should take all suitable measures, including provisions of extension joint and availability of permissible and acceptable level difference of soil on both sides of the wall. The wall should be constructed along the alignment and on a location as near as possible to the present alignment and location keeping in view the parameters of the safety of the wall and its strength as paramount. The order also authorised the Executive Officer to make use of the materials which can be retrieved from the demolished wall. The District Magistrate also directed the Railway authorities in general and the Station Superintendent of the Sonepat Railway Station in particular to extend all support and help to the Executive Officer in the relocation and reconstruction of the wall. He also directed all individuals and public functionaries, including the electricity, public health and telephone authorities to extend their cooperation to the Executive Officer in the construction of the wall.

Official sources revealed that the District Magistrate had taken this action following the receipt of several complaints that the boundary wall of the Railway compound was old and was damaged extensively at many points. Besides, the wall was quite weak and was only about six feet high.

Moreover, the Sonepat-Rohtak road was a very busy road. A part of this wall had collapsed due to during a light rain killing stray dogs and pigs. The public complaints also alleged that the Railway authorities had failed to redress their grievances on the ground that there was no budget provision for taking safety measures.
