‘Jhankar’ ends with fashion show
Weather gods play spoilsport but crowd hangs on

Chandigarh, February 7
High pitched music and top fashion models walking down the ramp in front of a 3,000-strong crowd of enthusiastic youngsters amidst unexpected rains on the Panjab University campus tonight marked the grand finale of Jhankar-2002, the three-day all-India inter state university Youth Festival here.

Everything was just going according to the mood of PU students and participants of Jhankar, but rain played spoilsport when the fashion show was approaching its end. The crowd amidst tight security arrangements did not create much chaos.

Jhankar, which began on a rather low-key note, witnessed packed house at the valedictory function at the university auditorium this evening. Of course, the high time was the fashion show.

The fashion show presented by the National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFD) began more than an hour late but once it started, youngsters gathered at the grounds adjacent to the Student Centre sat mesmerised till the final round of the show. Top models from Delhi and Mumbai, Mehr Besin, Safali Talwar, Aparna Kumar, Setu Kumar, Simran, Ruhi, Naina and a Russian model Lada apart from four male models sashayed down the ramp to the music by Rythymix. The show was choreographed by Priyanka Singh

Earlier in the day, Dr Anmol Ratan Sidhu, gave away prizes to the winners who participated in various contests. The students presented a colourful dance and song programme at the valedictory function. The highlight of the valedictory function was dance numbers by four-year-old Simran Lishu and eight-year-old Chirag Sehgal.

Value-based corporate sector needed’

The National Institute of Personnel Management (Punjab Chapter) organised a seminar on ‘Growing talent: The key to competitive advantage here today. Mr Ramesh Inder Singh, Principal Secretary, Punjab Government, was the chief guest.

In his inaugural address, he stressed the importance of education and knowledge in enhancing business excellence. He stated that the need of the hour was to tap and nurture the talent available in the country in order to achieve competitive heights. He highlighted the need to create a strong value base by the corporate sector to ensure long-term success. He also emphasised the role of institutes like NIPM in promoting professionalism in the field of human resource management.

The chairperson of NIPM, Ms Amar Deepika, after welcoming the chief guest, briefed the participants about the objectives and activities of the institute, including providing a forum for experiential sharing and dissemination of information. The institute, she informed, organised discussions, conferences, seminars, and training programmes on contemporary HR issues. The current training programme, she said, was directed at achieving the broader objective of the institute.

Mr G.S. Gill, vice-chairperson of the institute, introduced the faculty to the participants. Mr Balbir Singh, honorary secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. About 40 executives participated.

Mr Anil Sachdev, founder and CEO of Grow Talent Company Limited, a management guru in the area of talent management and value-based business, conducted the training programme along with Mr Milind Kelkar, Chief Operating Officer, Grow Talent Company Limited. Mr Sachdev highlighted that talent was a powerful combination of values and capacities. The four capacities that combined with values were those of learning, thinking, relating and acting.

Gaiety and fun at college competitions

Gaiety, fun and frolick marked the first day of the three day inter-college cultural and literary competitions that began at the Government College here today.

The programme was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jyoti Arora, who said that self- expression not only developed intelligence among students but also improved their mental status and was important for the overall development of the human being.

The function began with the Deputy Commissioner lighting the traditional lamp. The students presented the Saraswati Vandana, which was followed by various cultural programmes. As many as 15 teams and 11 individuals participated in the declamation contest while 13 teams and 14 individual entries were received in the poetry competition. Five teams and seven individuals participated in the recital of shlokas. A number of entries for Rangoli, flower arrangement and embroidery competitions were also received. The results of the various competitions are given as under:-

10 promoted as principal

The Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) of the Education Department, Chandigarh, has recommended names of 10 senior lecturers and a headmistress, working in various government schools, for promotion to the posts of principal. The final selection list, signed by the committee members and Mr R. S. Gujral, Secretary Home and Education, reached the office of the DPI (School) today morning.

The names recommended by the DPC are Ms Suraj Bala Mittal, Mr Dilbag Singh, Mr Ram Kumar Sharma, Ms Sudeep Kaur, Ms Jaswinder Kaur, Mr V. P. Sharma, Ms Suman Sharma, Mr K. S. Modi, Ms Indira Dhingra and Ms Viney Sood in the category of senior lecturers and Ms Vimla Malik in the category of headmaster or headmistress.

The order was the outcome of a meeting held under the chairmanship of Mr R. S. Gujral, after the Chandigarh Bench of the Central Administration Tribunal (CAT) directed the authority to fill the vacant posts of principal and senior lecturer that became available before and after March, 1996.

Gautam, Deepak Manmohan on varsity board

The constitution of the ten-member Board of Finance, Panjab University, has been completed by the Vice-Chancellor. He nominated Prof Satya Pal Gautam and Prof Deepak Manmohan Singh, members of the syndicate, as members of the board.

Earlier, Ms Usha Gupta, principal of MCM DAV College, Sector 36 , and Mr R.S. Verma, former Chief Secretary, Haryana, had been elected to the board from among members of the Senate.

This completed the constitution of the board, consisting of the Vice-Chancellor as the chairman, the DUI, the Registrar and representatives of Government of India, UT Administration, and Government of Punjab.

HIGH COURT
Sack for rash driving upheld

Chandigarh, February 7
The High Court, in a significant judgement, today ruled that the termination of a bus driver, convicted for driving the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner, was not illegal.

Ruling on a petition filed by Baru Ram against the state of Haryana and the General Manager of Haryana Roadways, the Bench, comprising Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar and Mr Justice Mehtab Singh Gill, ruled: “Conviction under Section 304-A is not a conviction for moral turpitude. This aspect of the case cannot be lost sight of. The petitioner was never charged for any offence coming under the ambit of moral turpitude but was dismissed from service on the ground that he was driving the bus in a rash and negligent manner. If reinstated, he will again be driving the bus on the road in a rash and negligent manner for which he was previously convicted”.

The Judges added: “The conduct of the petitioner was not up to the standard of a bus driver and he should have driven the bus carefully and cautiously so that no pedestrian was injured. His termination is not illegal. His petition is dismissed”.

Police remand for gangster

Panchkula, February 7
Notorious gangster Mahavir has been brought here by the CIA Staff on a production warrant. He is the main accused in the Sector 6 shootout case in which Sachit was killed over a minor altercation.

It is learnt that Mahavir was brought here by the local police from Hisar. He had been arrested by the Hisar police a few weeks back on charges of attempt to murder, extortion and assault. He was presented at the local court today and has been given a four-day police remand.

It may be recalled that the victim, Sachit, while playing snooker at one of the joints in Sector 6 was threatened by Vishal, who came back with Mahavir. The latter shot Sachit on the back of his head. A case under Sections 307, 506 and 34 of the IPC was registered against Vishal, his friend Sanjay Rahi and Mahavir. While Vishal and Sanjay were arrested by the police, Mahavir had absconded.

‘Yeh Mohabbat Hai’ has been made by Umesh Mehra under the banner Cine Vista Eagle Plus Media Pvt Ltd. He has directed ‘Hamare Tumhare’, ‘Alibaba 40 Chor’, ‘Sohni Mahiwal’, ‘Jaal’ and ‘Kila’. Produced by Prem Kishan, Sunil Mehta and Mehra, the film marks the debut of ‘Mr Graviera Photogenic’ 1997-98, Rahul Bhatt, and Kishan’s daughter, Aakansha. Mehra admits to the pressures of launching two new faces.

The film which opens today at Nirman in Chandigarh, is a romantic love story in the backdrop of terrorism. It has been shot extensively in Uzbekistan. The film has generated a lot of pre-release interest.

Starring Akansha, Rahul Bhatt, Nasir Khan, Mohini Sharma, Parikshat Sahni, Danny Denzongpa, Arbaz Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Mohnish Behl, Rakesh Bedi, Johny Lever, Dolly Bindra, Avtar Gill and Anjana Mumtaz, the story is by Mehra, cinematography by S Pappu, art by Leeladhar Sawant, choreography by Bhushan Lakhandari, action by Kannu and Ravi and lyrics by Dev Kohli.
