High BP treated through surgery

Ludhiana, February 6
Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, urologist and transplant surgeon, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, has treated a 30-year-old patient suffering from uncontrollable blood pressure using laparoscopic surgery.

Claiming it to be the first successful surgery of its kind, the doctor said that the patient was totally cured and did not require any medicine throughout her life. Giving details, Dr Aulakh said that the patient was married for the past eight years and had to undergo abortion twice.

She was suffering from high blood pressure, headache, palpitations and excessive sweating.

The doctors in Delhi told her she had developed tumour of the adrenal gland and advised her to get it removed.

She came to the DMC where the doctors worked for two weeks to manage and stabilise her blood pressure necessary for surgery.

Dr Aulakh performed laparoscopic surgery and the tumour was removed successfully. While more than 20-cm incision is required to remove the tumour, only 1-cm incision was made and the patient was discharged 72 hours after the surgery, said the doctor.

Sports meet enters third day

Ludhiana, February 6
The preliminary matches in table tennis and kho-kho were conducted on the third day of the sports festival of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, Gujarkhan campus, Model Town, here today.

In table tennis (singles), Gaurika of BCA-VI and Nidhi Bhandari of BCA-IV recorded victories in their respective matches. In doubles, Gaurika pairing with Richa, student of BCA-VI, and the duo of Nidhi and Sheena of BCA-IV romped home victorious.

Sports festival

The 24th Annual Rural Sports Festival organised in the memory of Sant Baba Teja Singh by the Panchayati Raj Sports Club, Ghaloti, concluded at Sant Ishar Singh Public School, Rara Sahib, near here, on Tuesday.

In kabaddi (open category), Dasmesh Academy of Tony Kalakh outplayed Tony Club of Kubbe in the final 27-25. In kabaddi (one village), Ghaloti managed to defeat Ber Khurd Club 19-17. In the 60-kg category, Ghaloti defeated Katahari 29-24 and in the 52-kg category, Ghaloti defeated Bheelah 16-13.

In the girls’ section, Kurukshetra prevailed over Yamunanagar 24-23, while in an exhibition match (above 40 years), Ludhiana beat Moga 33-30.

In hockey, Harpal Club of Kila Raipur defeated Ludhiana Police Range XI 2-1 to lift the trophy. Pargat Singh and Kulwinder Singh scored for the Kila Raipur Club, while the lone scorer for the losers was Mandeep Singh.

In athletics (girls), Harpreet Kaur won 400 m and 200 m races. In 100 m, Jyoti beat Harpreet Kaur to bag the gold. Mr Harbans Singh Sangera, who was the chief guest, gave away trophies.

DC to political parties: observe model code of conduct

Fatehgarh Sahib, February 6
Mr Vikas Partap, District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner, Fatehgarh Sahib, today told all contesting candidates of the Sirhind constituency and political parties to strictly abide by the model code of conduct during the election campaign. He said stern action would be taken against violators. He said the process to seal electronic voting machines would be done on February 9, 10 and 11 at Mandi Gobindgarh for the Amloh constituency and here for the Sirhind constituency.

The meeting was convened to apprise the candidates of the provisions of the code. He said it would be mandatory for the parties and candidates to submit prior information to the local police regarding the venue and time of the meetings and processions. All printed material related to the elections must bear the name of publisher and printer and a copy of each material had to be submitted to the Returning Officer. The Deputy Commissioner said any vehicle fitted with loudspeaker without permission would not be allowed. The use of loudspeakers would be only allowed between 6 am and 10 pm.

Liquor vends to remain closed for four days

Ludhiana, February 6
The District Magistrate, Mr S.K. Sandhu, has ordered closure of all the country and foreign liquor vends and authorised drinking places all over the district from February 11 till the evening of February 13 and again on February 24 in view of the ensuing assembly elections.

According to orders, issued under Section 54 of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, the clubs, hotels and restaurants would also not serve or sell liquor during this period.
