Top pugilists for YMCA international meet
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, January 31
The top pugilists from India and abroad will participate in the New Delhi YMCA International Boxing Championships to be held at the New Delhi YMCA ring from February 1 to 4.

Leading the international flavour will be Azizjan Rahmonov of Uzbekistan, the current World Cadet champion. He had won the gold in the 81kg category in the World Cadet Championship in Baku three months ago. Aziz Ulugov is another top Uzbek boxer who will be seen in action. He had won the silver medal in the Golden Ring Tournament in Poland in October last year. Seven British boxers, all

national champions in their weight category, will also be competing in the championships.

Boxers from Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Chinese Taipei and Syria will also participate in the championships.

Organising secretary, Sarvjeet Singh said in the Capital that the YMCA Championships would afford the Indian boxers a platform to test their skills ahead of the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games this year. The postponement of the inaugural Afro-Asian Games and the SAF Games robbed the Indian pugilists of valuable competition opportunities, and the YMCA Championships will fill that void to some extent.

“The whole idea behind reviving boxing as a national level meet in India is to provide the much-needed competition to the Indian boxers. We have pleasure in saying that the YMCA has done much work towards fulfilling this goal,” added Mr Sarvjeet Singh. He said seven teams, including two from India, have already confirmed their participation.

Competitions will be held in light fly (48kg), fly (51kg), bantam (54kg), feather (57kg), light (60kg), light welter (65kg), light middle (71kg), middle (75kg) and light heavy (81kg).

Mundy leaps to top as Feroz falters
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, January 31
On a perfect day for golf, Uttam Singh Mundy shot a two-under 70 and cashed in on overnight leader Feroz Ali’s erratic form to jump on top of the leader board at the midway stage of the inaugural Rs 10 lakh Telegraph Open, being played at the par-72 Royal Calcutta golf club course, today.

The twice Honda-Siel PGA champion from Kolkata, looking for his first title on the Hero Honda Golf Tour this season, aggregated two-under 142 to lead by one stroke over Gaurav Ghei of Delhi and Digvijay Singh of Meerut, who were tied for the second place at one-under 143. Feroz slipped to the fourth place after a round of three-over 75, which put him at level par for the tournament. The cut was applied at 12-over 156. Mundy, who is sponsored by Eveready, shot as many as six birdies. However, his good work was undone by four birdies, three of which came in the first seven holes. “I gave myself several opportunities and am happy to have posted a two-under 70, especially after being two-over after seven holes. However, being in lead was a bit of surprise as I thought conditions were ripe for good scores,” said Mundy who is currently ranked fourth in the Hero Honda Indian Golf Tour.

Ghei, coming out of a fortnight-long rest during last week.
