Contented Olympian

Olympian Hardeep Singh Grewal, who has represented India in many international hockey championships, is a contented man. For him, the achievement and result of effort is more important than the reward.

Hardeep believes that if one has done something marvellous, others cannot ignore him. Long time after his innings as a player, he has been allotted an LPG agency by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited. Hardeep represented India in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, Asian Games in 1986, World Cup in 1986 and the Lahore World Cup in 1990. He had also participated in a number of state, national and international events.

Filing of nominations to begin today

Ludhiana, January 15
Mr S K Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner and the District Election Officer, today said that the process for the filing of nomination papers for the elections to 12 Assembly segments in the district would start from January 16 and would continue till January 23 till 3 pm. He said that no nomination papers would be accepted on January 20 and 21 as these were holidays. The nomination papers could be presented in the offices of the Returning Officers concerned from 11 am to 3 pm.

Giving details of the election programme, Mr Sandhu said that the scrutiny of the nomination papers would be done on January 24 and the nomination papers could be withdrawn till 3 pm on January 28 except on holidays falling on January 26 and 27. He said that the polling would be held on February 13 from 8 am to 5 pm through the electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the counting would take place on February 24.

Mr Sandhu also informed that the required number of EVMs had already been issued to the ROs concerned and they had started the training program for the polling staff. He said that to apprise the people about the functioning of the EVMs, demonstrations would be given by holding the meetings in the different areas by the ROs. He said that the process of deputing the polling staff was also in process and the representatives of all political parties had been informed about the provisions of model code of conduct of the Election Commission of India by organising their meeting.
