Students organise cultural evening

Chandigarh, January 2
The students and faculty of Global College Sector 4, Panchkula, organised a cultural evening and dance party to celebrate the New Year at Hotel Prabhat Inn last evening.

The faculty is using hi-tech methods to teach the students like computerised notes and assignments. Illustrations and things like chemical reactions and the working of machinery are explained on computers with live demonstrations.

About 60 students and 11 faculty members participated in the New Year celebrations. The programme started with Ganesh vandana and concluded with the address of Gaurav Soi, executive director, and Anuradha Saini, senior coordinator of the college. They advised the students to put in the maximum efforts to face the competitions.

Panjab varsity takes light to Varanasi

Dr Shankarji Jha, Professor and a former Chairman of the Department of Sanskrit, Panjab University, was honoured by Sampoornanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi, for enlightening an all-India congregation of Advaita scholars at the week end.

Explaining the critical areas of Advaita philosophy, Professor Jha explained the crux of the Mandana Mishra school of philosophy in which reasonable living with one’s worldly circumstances was beautifully reconciled to the rigidly ascetic way of acquiring knowledge and achieving fulfilment.

Prof Ramamurti Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of the university, presented a citation in honour of Professor Jha for reviving the tradition of “shastrartha” (learned philosophical and theological discussion) at Kashi.

HIGH COURT
ECI plea for vacating stay

The Election Commission of India today filed an application in the High Court seeking the vacation of stay granted by the court while taking up petitions filed by Muktsar’s Deputy Commissioner K.J.S. Cheema, besides Kapurthala’s Deputy Commissioner Vivek Aggarwal and Amritsar’s Deputy Commissioner Narinderjit Singh. The application is likely to be heard tomorrow. Taking up Mr Cheema’s petition, claiming that he was ordered to be transferred by the ECI without jurisdiction, Mr Justice R.L. Anand had on December 30 stayed the operation of an order issued by the state relieving him from his present assignment and asking him to report for duty in the personnel department.

Mr Justice Anand had also stayed the operation of order passed by the ECI asking the state to transfer Kapurthala’s Deputy Commissioner Vivek Aggarwal along with Amritsar’s Deputy Commissioner Narinderjit Singh.

Order to Haryana on arrears

Taking up a petition filed by the employees of Haryana’s Industrial Training and Vocational Education Department seeking directions for the payment of arrears, a Division Bench of the High Court on Wednesday directed the state of Haryana and other respondents to pass appropriate orders on a representation submitted by them in June last year.

Pronouncing the orders on a petition filed by Mr Balbir Singh and three other employees, the Bench, comprising Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar and Mr Justice Mehtab Singh Gill, also directed the respondents to pass the orders in accordance with the law within three months.

In their petition, Mr Balbir Singh and others had sought directions to the respondents to pay arrears with effect from February 3, 1995 till September 16, 1996, and again from September 17, 1996 till October 16, 1998 on account of their deemed dates of promotion.

DISTRICT COURTS
Judicial remand for Vicky

Chandigarh, January 2
An accused, Vicky, who was arrested in a case of murder, has been remanded in judicial custody till January 16 by a local court. The accused was arrested for allegedly murdering a resident of Maloya, Jaipal, in the Sector 25 Janata Colony, yesterday.

Blast case: The two accused in the Sector 34 bomb blast case retracted from their statements before a local court today. The accused, Sher Singh and Gurbax Singh, stated that they had not given the statements that they were involved in the case. The statements of Sher Singh and Gurbax Singh had been recorded under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The accused also stated that they had not mentioned the name of Rattandeep Singh, the main accused in the bomb blast case, and alleged that the Panipat police had recorded false statements.

Notice to PPCC: A local court issued a notice to the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) in a civil suit filed to challenge the denial of party nomination to Mr Nirmal Singh Mahant, former MLA of Ludhiana and applicant. Notice is returnable by January 9.

The plaintiff had filed a civil suit that he had the right to contest the assembly election on the Congress ticket from the Raikot constituency. The plaintiff had also prayed for the issuance of temporary injunction restraining the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee through its President, Punjab Congress Bhavan, Sector 15, and the All-India Congress Committee through its President, 24, Akbar Road, New Delhi, from allotting the congress ticket to the defendant, Mr Harmohinder Singh.

Bail refused: A local court today dismissed the bail plea of the accused, Sangeeta Gupta, in a rape case. The accused was arrested by the city police along with a local politician, Sweetie Bajaj, Kuldeep Dhaia and Avtar Singh Tari. All the four accused are presently lodged in Burail Jail.

Firm told to pay Rs 10,000 compensation

Finding deficiency in the services of the Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company the UT Consumer court has directed the former to pay Rs 10, 000 as compensation to a city resident for causing harassment to him.

The court has also directed it to get the car engine overhauled to the complainant’s satisfaction.

Mr Avtar Krishan Mehandiratta of Sector 18 C had stated that he had purchased a Tata Sumo vehicle on November 14, 1996, at a cost of Rs 3, 18, 00 from the opposite party. The vehicle carried 18 months warranty and it was got registered by him. The opposite party provided the service to the complainant, being the authorised service centre of the manufacturer.

The complainant alleged that the vehicle suffered from defects from the very beginning. It was giving low average, consuming high mobile oil and at the speed of 70 to 80 km it started vibrating and wobbling. The doors were not in proper alignment and order and the repair carried out proved useless.

He further alleged that he had approached the opposite party a number of times but to no success. He said the vehicle was a defective one and it was sold to him by misrepresenting facts. All these constituted unfair trade practices and deficiency in the service on part of the opposite party. Therefore, the complainant had prayed that the opposite party be directed to refund the cost of the vehicle along with interest and compensation for harassment, and costs of the case.

Shooting of ‘Lakk Marore Khave’

Acting Lab, a division of DAC College imparting training in the field of IT, fashion designing, beauty care and various other job-oriented courses, had arranged the shooting of two episodes of DD-Punjabi channel, ''Lakk Marore Khave'', in association with Avnish Production. Students of Acting Lab participated in the episodes along with other participants from all over Punjab and Haryana and won the main prizes. The shooting was conducted on December 30 and 31.

The first prize of the first episode was awarded to Nandini Rajput and the second to Salina Prakash. The winners of second episode were Suruchi (first) and Harpreet Singh (second prize).
