Pankaj clinches PAU TT title

Ludhiana, September 30
Pankaj Kumar, student of the College of Veterinary Sciences, Punjab Agriculture University, quelled a stiff challenge from Saurabh Suneja of the College of Agriculture Engineering before emerging as winner to become PAU champion in the 13th Prithipal Singh Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament being held on the PAU campus.

In the PAU men’s singles final, after winning the first set quite easily at 11-6, Pankaj lost second and third sets 7-11, 8-11. In the fourth game, he faced stiff resistance from Saurabh before romping home 11-9. Pankaj sealed the decider at 11-7 to clinch the title.

Results: Cadet boys (semifinal): Sahil (Ldh) bt Kashish Jain (Ldh) 11-6, 11-7; Amit (Jal) bt Saurabh (Jal) 11-6, 11-7.

Cadet girls (semifinal): Neha (Khn) bt Gurpreet (Sang) 11-8, 11-9; Nirdosh (Ldh) bt Shelja (Sang) 11-7, 11-8.

Sub-junior girls (quarterfinal): Dimple (Khn) bt Meenakshi (Sang) 11-8, 11-9; Gurpreet (Sang) bt Sukhwinder (Jal) 11-7, 11-4; Deepika (Khn) bt Neha (Khn) 7-11, 11-7, 11-9; Isha (Khn) bt Garima (Ldh) 11-7, 11-8.

PAU men’s singles (semifinal): Saurabh bt Ravikant 11-6, 3-11, 11-9; Pankaj Kumar bt Anubhav 11-6, 11-7.

Final: Pankaj bt Saurabh 11-6, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7.

Hockey players felicitated

Ludhiana, September 30
The Knitwear Club organised a function here last night to honour the probables and coaches of the Indian hockey team. These prospective members of the Indian team, including captain Baljit Singh Dhillon, Dhanraj Pillay, Mohd. Riaz and Dilip Tirkey, had been attending the first preparatory camp in anticipation of the forthcoming World Hockey Cup Tournament to be held early next year in Malaysia.

The camp started on September 10 at the Punjab Agricultural University hockey ground and was later shifted to Jalandhar as some of the campers got themselves injured allegedly due to the poor condition of the astroturf here. Dilip Tirkey received a knee injury but has since recovered .These 26 probables would now re-assemble at Jalandhar, tentatively on October 10 for the second camp.

Mr Chander Shekhar, Inspector-General of Police and vice-president of the Indian Hockey Federation, was the chief guest of this felicitation function. He honoured hockey players and the chief coach of the national team, Cedric D' Souza, along with assistant coaches C.R. Kumar and Saju Joseph.

Mr Sat Pul Beri, patron, Readymade Hosiery Manufaturers Association ( REHMA) , while welcoming the players, announced that the association would give a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh to the Indian hockey team if it won any medal in the next World Cup.

Sulbha Jindal swims to glory

Sulbha Jindal, a student of the first year of Chaudhary Sarwan Singh Krishi Vishaw Vidyalya, Palampur, proved her supremacy in the swimming competition, organised for the Sutlej Club members and their dependents at the club swimming pool here today.

In the 25 metre freestyle event, ( 17 to 20 years ), Sulbha finished ahead of her rivals Roopika Arora and Sharda Thapar to bag the title.

DMC win basketball championship

Ludhiana, September 30
Dayanand Medical College has won gold medal in the Annual National-level Basketball Competition of medical colleges. The competition was held at AIIMS (Delhi) under the event ‘Pulse 2001’, a week-long youth festival of all medical colleges in India .

Fifteen teams from all over India and a team from Sri Lanka participated in the championship, which concluded in Delhi recently. During the championship team from the DMC won different matches against AIIMS, Sri Lanka, Christian Medical College and the MAMC. The final match was played between the DMC and AIIMS.

Fifty students represented the DMC in the cultural and sports championships in Pulse-2001. Dr Varuna was the team leader of the cultural team. Dr Rajoo Singh Chinna was in charge of basketball team. The team members expressed their gratitude to the Principal, Dr S.C. Ahuja, for his overall support.
