Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob, Administrator, Chandigarh, today underlined the need for improving health infrastructure in slums and colonies to help the under-privileged sections of society.

Speaking after inaugurating an X-ray machine installed by the Punjab Vikas Parishad at its charitable diagnostic centre at Indira Holiday Home, the Administrator said though Chandigarh had good health and education infrastructure, yet there was a need to do more for the under-privileged. He said more non-government organisations should come forward to set up diagnostic centres on ‘no profit, no loss’ basis.

Stressing the importance for making people aware of oral hygiene, General Jacob said recent studies had shown that 65 per cent children were suffering from dental disorders. He said the Bharat Vikas Parishad should explore the possibility of running a mobile dental van, so as to serve the population living in slums and colonies.

Earlier, the Administrator inaugurated a 500 MA X-ray machine. The project director of the BVP’s charitable diagnostic centre, Mr Ajay Dutta, highlighted the nature of clinical tests being performed at subsidised rates. He said all types of X-ray tests would cost Rs 50 to the general public and nothing would be charged from the poor and the downtrodden.

Earlier, Justice J.V. Gupta, all-India working president of the Bharat Vikas Parishad, apprised the audience of the activities of the parsihad and presided over the function.

Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, September 30
The Anti-Encroachment Committee has flayed the local administration for ignoring large-scale encroachments in the town. The committee said almost all hotel owners and shopkeepers had encroached upon public space in front of their premises.

Mr N.S. Minhas, president of the committee, said the practice of not constructing the front boundary wall had become a norm with the house occupants in the town. In the new sectors, especially Sectors 70 and 71, the residents had raised fences right along the road berm. He said violations had repeatedly been brought to the notice of the Estate Officer and the Additional Chief Administrator of PUDA but to no avail.

Mr I.S. Waraich, a member of the committee, said PUDA was only issuing notices to the violators and doing nothing beyond it. He said the committee would approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court in this issue. Demanding a thorough inquiry into the matter, the committee said responsibility should be fixed on the PUDA officials concerned. Some of the PUDA officials had themselves encroached upon public land in front of the houses, said Mr Minhas.
