Role, duties of IT’s Settlement
Commission discussed Chandigarh, September 28 Giving an overview of the commission’s role and charter of duties of the commission, Mr Ashwini Kumar, delved upon the conditions stipulated for filing applications before the commission by the assessees. While listing out the enclosures to be attached with the application, he also discussed the procedures to be followed before and after the admission of applications. Talking about the prevailing mind-set amongst the assessees as well as functionaries of the commission, Mr K.P. Garg, highlighted the practical aspects of approaching the commission for sorting out tax disputes. The best approach for assessees, he said, should be to approach the commission with an open mind. The Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, North Western Region, Mr J.S. Ahluwalia, discussed upon the changing economic scenario and the role of the commission. He said that instead of burdening the commission with more work, assessees should declare their correct income and pay tax accordingly, which would be beneficial to both parties. Stating that assessment must reflect to a reasonable extent, Mr V.P. Srinivasan, member of the Settlement Commission, said it was important that people make a full and true declaration of income. Mr S.C. Prija, also a member of the commission, gave several examples of cases which ended in significant decisions. He said that the role of the commission is to arbitrate, mediate and settle income tax disputes and not to go into the legalities of the issues. The Chairman of the commission, Mr A Chaterjee, who was the chief guest on the occasion, summed up the proceedings and gave his views and opinions on some of the issues discussed earlier. He also answered queries on technical matters raised by the audience. |
