TT title for Harman

In a ding-dong battle, former Punjab junior champion, Harman, prevailed over Disney Rayit, 4-3 to bag the men’s title in the Ludhiana District Table Tennis Championship which concluded here at the Shastri Hall of the Guru Nanak Stadium on Saturday evening.

The final between two brothers, trainees of the Punjab Agricultural University Table Tennis Coaching Centre, began on a fast pace with both the players playing an aggressive game. In the first three sets, the elder brother, Harman, managed to romp home, 11-8,11-9 and 11-7.

Later, the younger brother, Disney, a student of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, forced Harman to play a defensive game. Disney’s forceful backhand shots made Harman commit mistakes and surrendering three sets in row at 8-11, 9-11 and 9-11.

However, in the deciding set, Harman raced into lead and eventually won, 11-9, and bagged the title.

Mr D.P. Singh, general manager, Coca Cola, gave away prizes to the participants. Mr S.L. Lotey, District Sports Officer, and Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, were also present at the prize distribution function.

BSNL staff to stage dharna

Ludhiana, September 23
Employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Punjab Telecom Circle, will stage a dharna in front of the Chief General Manager’s office in protest against the indifferent attitude of the circle administration.

In a joint press statement, Mr Balbir Singh, circle secretary, and Mr Balwinder Singh, district secretary, of the BSNL Employees Union, said a charter of demands was submitted to the management for the settlement of pending demands, such as over-time allowance against shortage of staff, which was in the range of 50 per cent in Punjab Circle, speedy settlement of pension cases, payment of honorarium, provision of covered cash vehicles, DPC for cable splicers, promotion of drivers, compassionate appointments and recruitment of more staff.

A meeting of the circle working committee held at Jalandhar on September 20 condemned the delaying tactics of the Chief General Manager, Telecom.
