Osama dominates collage-making contest

Ludhiana, September 23
It was Osama, everywhere in the collage and poster-making competition organised at the Ramgarhia College for Girls here today. The students who were given three topics to make the collage and posters chose to use the pictures of Osama bin Laden to convey their message to eradicate terrorism.

The students were asked to make collages and posters on traffic safety, save the environment and terrorism. The 10-day NSS camp was also organised at the college. It was inaugurated by the Forest Officer, Mr C.K. Shahi.

Apart from this the Rotract Club of Ramgarhia College and Rotary Club, Ludhiana Central, also inaugurated the Rotary projects week. As many as 150 youths are attending the camp having a theme “Youth for healthy society”.

As many as 35 students participated in the poster and collage-making contest. The results of the competition are: Poster-making: Inderdeep and Navjot — first, Jaspreet and Harpreet — second, Ashminder and Jasvir — third; Collage making: Dalwinderjit — first, Gurpreet Kaur — second and Arti Tiwari — third.

Freshers’ party

Ludhiana, September 23
Students of the College of Agriculture (CoA), Punjab Agricultural University, organised a freshers’ party at Pal Auditorium yesterday. Sukhdeep Singh Brar was adjudged Mr Fresher and Mandeep Kaur was crowned Miss Fresher.

The party was attended by all staff members of the college and the Dean, CoA, Dr M.S. Tiwana. Students presented various items, including songs, skits, comedy, songs, choreography, solo dances and bhangra.

Tehsil complex workers’ body formed

A meeting of the tehsil complex document writers, typists, ‘naqsha nawis’, and owners of photostat shops and STD booths was held on the premises of the local Bar Association yesterday, under the chairmanship of Mr Narinder Vashishtha.

The problem of rehabilitation, arising out of selling of the old tehsil complex to PUDA, was discussed in detail. While the advocates have already been allotted 30 pucca chambers by Mr S.S. Brar, SDM, in the new tehsil complex, the place proposed to be allotted to other workers is very small. Following this, they have requested the SDM to relax the ban on installation of wooden cabins in the new tehsil complex.

A 13-member committee, the Tehsil Complex Welfare Association, Samrala, was also formed. Mr Vashishtha was elected president, Mr Jaswant Singh Kaler as senior vice-president, Mr Devinder Kumar and Sikander Singh as junior vice-presidents, Mr Suraj Parkash as general secretary, Mr Darbara Singh as secretary, Mr Pramod as joint secretary, Mr Krishan Lal as cashier and Mr Jaswant Rai as joint cashier.

‘Hindi saptah’ concludes

‘Hindi saptah’ organised by the zonal and regional offices of Punjab National Bank concluded today. To mark the conclusion of this programme a function was held in which a cultural programme, a fancy dress competition and a kavi sammelan were organised. A number of employees and their wards participated in the function.

During the week-long programme, competition in Hindi essay, Hindi typing, Hindi writing and Hindi poetry recitation were held. The results of this competition are: essay writing: Mr Harmeet Singh (typist) 1; Mr Darshan Sachdeva (computer operator) 2; Ms Alka Grover (steno-typist) 3; Mr Gulshan Arora and Mr Satish Bhambhoria: consolation prizes.

Typing: Mr Rajesh Chopra (typist) 1; Mr Harmeet Singh (typist) 2; Mr Satish Kumar (steno) 3; Mr Ramesh Kumar (typist) and Mr Gulshan Arora (typist), consolation prizes; and Ms Arvinder Kaur (typist) and Ajaib Singh (typist), special prizes.

Hindi poetry recitation: Mr Darshan Sachdeva 1; Mr Harmeet Singh 2; Ms Alka Grover 3; Ms Baljeet Kaur 4; and Mr Narinder Marwaha 5.

Writing competition: Mr Surat Singh (guard) 1; Mr Budh Singh (daftri) 2; Mr Puran Chand (daftri) 3; Mr Mahinder Paul (daftri) 4; and Mr Amar Singh (daftri) 5.

Mr H.L. Arora, Deputy General Manager, PNB, inaugurated the function which was presided over by Mr P.N. Khurana, General Manager, Punjab zone.

Lekhak Sabha holds symposium

A symposium on novel ‘Oonch Neech’ by Karamjit Aujla was organised by the Kendriya Punjabi Lekhak Sabha and Sirjandhara at Punjabi Bhavan today. Eminent Punjabi literary figures attended the symposium. The meeting was presided over by the writers S.S. Narula, Dr Parminder Singh and Prof Niranjan Tasneem.

Many writers read their papers on the novel. Dr S.S. Sewak congratulated the author for choosing a bold theme. Dr S.S. Narula said Aujla had used a unique descriptive method in the novel and had analysed the present social scenario and highlighted the deep-rooted corruptions in the society. S. Bedi said `the novel had brought out a distinction between various classes and highlighted the evils of caste system.
