Farmers cultivating IAF land

The controversy surrounding the ownership and tilling of thousands of acres of land belonging to the S.K. Firing Range of Indian Air Force, Halwara, which was being tilled for several years by a number of farmers here and surrounding villages is back at centre-stage as a large number of farmers have forcibly started cultivating the land.

Tension prevailed in the town this morning when hundreds of doctors blocked traffic on the GT Road for about 45 minutes in protest against the registration of a case against a local doctor. The doctor was booked on charge of negligence resulting in the death of a local youth.

Traders demand erring cops booked

A large number of traders blocked traffic for about half an hour at the busy Samrala chowk on the Ludhiana-Jalandhar bypass this evening in protest against the alleged forcible extortion bid by two cops, who were under the influence of liquor.

Kidnappers of boy identified
Ahmedgarh, September 15
The mystery behind the kidnapping of Abdesh Kumar, son of a local industrialist, on September 7 seems to have been solved with the arrest of main accused. The police, however, has denied the arrest but maintained that kidnappers had been identified.

MP distributes grants

At a cheque distribution function organised by Mr Isher Singh Meharban, a former minister, at the office of the Block Congress Committee, here yesterday, Mr Gurcharan Singh Ghalib, MP, Ludhiana, presented a cheque for Rs 14.35 lakh to the panchayat of Koom Kalan village and a cheque for Rs 1.5 lakh to the councillors of Ward Nos 7 and 2 for development purposes.

Shots fired over property dispute

Gurcharan Singh and his son Kulwinder Singh of Kothe Sherjung have been booked under Sections 323, 148, 149 and 307 and IPC of the 25, 57, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act in a property dispute case between Gurcharan Singh and his son on the statement of Raghbir Singh of Ajit Nagar.

Bank staff involved in Rs 68 lakh fraud
Ludhiana, September 15
A fraud worth lakhs of rupees has been detected in Co-operative Bank, Salem Tabri branch here. As many as 13 employees of the same bank have been accused of being involved in the fraud. More heads are likely to roll in the near future, police sources claimed.

Students of Ramgarhia Girls’ College, Millerganj, were adjudged winners for their co-curricular activities at a talent hunt contest here today.
Contests for various skits, dances and music items were held in which over 100 students participated. Girls performed classical and folk dances, including Rajasthani, Haryanavi and gidha dances.

Jerath granted bail
Chandigarh, September 15
Chandigarh’s former Chief Engineer K.K. Jerath was yesterday granted bail by Mr Justice K.S. Garewal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) way back in January 1998.

Bhangra sensation Mika in the city

Mika The singer who took the nation by storm by his first song Sawan mein lag gai aag... is in the city to perform. Mika, gentle and boyish looking, was very forthright in his talks with Ludhiana Tribune. He said he was in the field of music since 1991 as a guitarist and music arranger, but it was only in 1998 when he, inspired by the phenomenal success of his elder brother Daler Mehndi, decided to record his first album, “Sawan Mein Lag Gayee Aag”, that captulated him to the top.

Advanced eye surgery facility at DMCH

Dayanand Medical College and Hospital claims to have acquired expertise in Advanced Vitreo-Retinal Surgery, the most advanced form of eye surgery, after its faculty members received training at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Glasgow in the UK. Dr S.C. Ahuja, Principal, DMCH, in a press statement today said some faculty members had learnt phacoemulsification (stitchless cataract surgery through a corneal tunnel incision), which was not adequately available in India.

Club to hold national-level meet
Ludhiana, September 15
A new team of office-bearers of the Mata Sahib Sports Club, Jarkhar village, was constituted at a meeting of the club held at hotel Mehfil here yesterday. The term of this body will be two years, said Mr Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, chief organiser of the club. It was decided in the meeting that the club would organise a hockey tournament of national level at Jarkhar village in the month of October.
