National open bridge tourney begins today

Ludhiana, September 7
The stage is set for the National Open Bridge Tournament which begins at the local Sutlej Club here tomorrow.

More than 60 teams comprising of more than 250 participants, including senior IAS officers, retired and sitting judges of various High Courts, eminent technocrats and bureaucrats will take part in this tournament being sponsored jointly by the Trident Group of Industries and the Nahar Group of Industries.

Mr Krishan Goyal, general secretary of the Punjab Bridge Association while talking to the mediapersons at the venue of the tournament stated that the total prize money in this tournament would be Rs 60,000.

The prize money for the team in duplicate section would be Rs 20,000 for winners, Rs 10,000 for runners-up and Rs 4,000 for each position holder up to the eighth position. He further said in the pair section, the prize money would be Rs 4,000 for winners, Rs 2,000 for runners-up and Rs 1,000 for each position holder up to the eighth position.

Mr Y. S. Ratra, Financial Commissioner , Taxation, will inaugurate the tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m. while Mr N.K. Arora, Chief Secretary, Punjab, will be the chief guest on the concluding day and will distribute prizes to the winners.

Cricket title for Baddowal zone

Ludhiana, September 7
Baddowal zone comprising of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary Schools of Sarabha Nagar and Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar and CFC Senior Secondary School thrashed SDP zone by 7 wickets to clinch the title in the Ludhiana District Senior Secondary Schools Cricket Tournament (u-19) which concluded at the A S Senior Secondary School, Khanna, ground on Wednesday.

Baddowal zone won the toss and elected to field first. In the stipulated 20 overs, SDP Zone made 113 runs losing 9 wickets. Manoj scored 29 off 28 balls. Sanjeev made 22 and Rajbir contributed 10 runs.

For Baddowal zone Nipun captured three wickets for 18 runs while Tarandeep and Deepak took two each for 16 and 13 runs, respectively.

Baddowal zone achieved the target in just 13 overs losing three wickets. Satmeet Singh cracked 53 off 37 deliveries which included 6 sixes . Deepak Dhir hammered 36 off 33 balls while Sambhafv Jain made 15.

Cricket tourney

Rattan (35) and Parveen (23) helped SDP, Ludhiana I to outplay Gujjarwal XI by seven wickets and enter the final of the Inter-School Cricket Tournament being held at the SDP College for Women ground here today. Batting first, Gujjarwal XI were bowled out for 111 runs with main contributions coming from Simarjit (18), Gurpreet (13) and Davinder (11). SDP Ludhiana bowlers who shared the spoils were Rattan 2 for 11, Sarabjit 2 for 12 and Johny 3 for 14.

SDP Ludhiana I batsmen began their chase on a solid note and made the required runs after losing just three wickets. The main contributors were Rattan (35), Parveen (23), Karan Kalia (17), and Johny (15). For Gujjarwal Jaskamal, Satbir and Simran took one wicket each.

Badminton meet

More than 150 shuttlers have confirmed their participation in the there-day Ludhiana District Badminton Championship for boys and girls as well as senior men and women to be organised by the Ludhiana District Badminton Association, which begins in Guru Nanak Stadium here tomorrow.

Mr K.R. Lakhanpal, Principal Secretary, Finance, Punjab, will inaugurate the championship.

MC employees threaten stir

Ludhiana, September 7
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of 12 unions of the Municipal Corporation employees of the entire state have served an ultimatum on the state government to accept their pending demands immediately, failing which they would resort to agitation.

A meeting of the JAC held here yesterday came down heavily on the government for delaying tactics and indifferent attitude. According to Mr Tarlochan Singh Lochi, president, Nagarpalika Karamchari Union, there was grave apprehension among the employees over the reports about abolition of octroi which, they felt, would be disastrous as far as financial condition of the local bodies was concerned.
