Mayor takes stock of development
projects Chandigarh, September 7 The Mayor also expressed satisfaction over the quality of recarpeting work in Industrial Area Phase I. She was impressed with the maintenance and upkeep of the Sector 39 waterworks and observed that the same was at a par with what she saw in London. She exhorted the officials and councillors to find ways and means to step up the daily supply of water to the city. The daily requirement of the city was 96 MGD, whereas it received about 68 MGD from Kajauli waterworks and tubewells. The work of recarpeting the roads in the New Grain Market in Sector 39 was in progress and the officials assured her that the same would be completed in the next three days. She also asked them to undertake the recarpeting of roads in the slum areas of various colonies. She also highlighted the lapse in the quality of road work undertaken in Sectors 35-C and 37-A and some other parts of the city during the past five years. Participating in a seminar-cum-parbhat pheri, organised by the Citizens Awareness Group in collaboration with the State Resource Centre for Adult and Continuing Education, UT, at Government Senior Secondary School, Karsan, Ms Harjinder Kaur emphasised the need to organise women-oriented programmes in community centres and other such public places, this being the Women Empowerment year. She also called upon the area councillors to mitigate literacy from their areas so that the target of 100 per cent literacy could be achieved. She further said special attention must be paid in making migratory labourers residing in slum areas literate. The councillors who represent these wards should also take the initiative to remove illiteracy from their areas. She offered that the programmes related to adult continuing education could also be run from the community centres of the MC. |
