Technological upgradation is my
top priority: O.N. Nagi
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 5
Incorporating modern technology and expanding the technical side of research work and academics are the top priorities of the new PGI Dean, Prof Onkar Nath Nagi, Head, Orthopaedics Department, who took over as the 13th Dean of the PGI this afternoon. The issue of appointment of the Dean had been pending now for over three years. The HOD, Dentistry, Prof Amrit Tiwari, was the last appointee to this important post which was vacated on September 30, 1998.

The Dean’s post had been embroiled in many controversies . There have been two court cases in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, one of them immediately after the 98th meeting of the PGI Governing Body, which met in New Delhi on July 25.

Today, speculations over the Dean’s appointment finally ended after counsel for the institute placed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court minutes of the Governing Body which revealed that Professor Nagi — Professor and Head of the Department of Orthaopaedic Surgery — had been appointed as the Dean with immediate effect for a period of three years.

Talking to the TNS, Professor Nagi declined to comment on these recent controversies. “I am a professional and head of a department. And I cannot really comment on what transpired and at what level. As a Dean I have to look after academics and research in the institute, which I intend doing , with the help of the Director, “he said.

It may be mentioned that Professor Nagi’s name was included in the list of probables for this post for the first time. Others in the list included Prof Subhash Kumari Gupta, Prof R.N. Kataria, Prof Sarla Gopalan, Prof Sudha Suri and Prof R.J. Dash. The last mentioned is the seniormost faculty member of the institute. Sources in the Union Health Ministry said that the inclusion of his name meant that Professor Nagi had a good chance of being selected as the Dean.

On whether the issue of the appointment of the Dean should have resulted in bitter controversies, Professor Nagi said the post of head of a department was equally important.

He said ensuring that the PGI emerged as one of the best research institutes was his top priority. “Research at the PGI is already at a good level but there is always room for further improvement. With my professional activity as a doctor, I would now also be coordinating research and academics,” said the newly appointed Dean.

As an orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Nagi specialises in bone joint replacement surgery. He graduated from Government Medical College, Patiala in 1968, completed his postgraduation from the PGI in 1971 and received a Master’s degree in science from Oxford in England in 1981.

He has an excellent academic and research record and many prestigious awards and more than 209 national and international publications to his credit. Professor Nagi has made significant contributions in textbooks of orthopaedics and is on various institutional committees like those of the PGI, Sector 32 GMCH and Saket Hospital at the Panchkula. Besides, he is also a visiting professor at the University of Malaysia and Singapore University.

He is also a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He took over as the Head of the Orthopaedics Department in 1990 and was also selected for the post of Director-Principal of the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, last year in November. He, however, refused the prestigious offer.

CHB likely to meet deadline on sheds
Pradeep Sharma
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 5
Those who believe that delaying possession is the forte of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB), think again. The premier construction agency of the Chandigarh Administration is all set to complete the construction of 365 car and scooter sheds for auto mechanics and dealers by October 10 at a short notice.

The construction of these sheds have been handed over by Administration to the CHB following a direction by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Administration that auto mechanics and dealers of Sectors 27, 28 and 21 should be shifted by October 10. The High Court had warned that contempt of court proceedings would be initiated against the Administration if it failed to meet the October 10 deadline for shifting the auto markets, sources told Chandigarh Tribune here today.

The Administration then sent an SOS to the board for the construction of these sheds so as to avoid contempt of court proceedings. The board took the job on a priority basis and started the construction around August 20.

Originally, 365 sheds were to be constructed in different sectors. However, following a direction by the High Court that status quo be maintained, the work on the construction on the 60 scooter sheds near St Kabir School in Sector 26 had been suspended temporarily.

Earlier, the Estate Office had offered 431 built-up sites to the auto mechanics in Sectors 48 and West of 38. While the sites were limited, the number of applicants outnumbered the sites. Different auto associations had alleged irregularities in the allotment of the built-up sites in Sector 48 and the West of 38, following which the Estate Office had to conduct another draw of lots last month.

Giving details, sources informed that while 50 car sheds would be built in Sector 48, 45 car sheds would be constructed in Sector 28. Similarly, the board would build 60 scooter sheds each in Sectors 43 and 52. As many as 90 scooters sheds would be built in Sector 48. The roofs of the sheds would be of fibre glass. This had been done to save time so that the deadline could be met. The exact prices of the sheds were being worked out, the sources added.

Meanwhile, the CHB decided to give a few more days to the applicants of its scheme in Sector 51 here for the submission of correct proofs of residence. The board proposed to hold a draw of lots for the scheme in the third week of September.
