Committee to train medical officers

Chandigarh, August 3
The Chandigarh Administration today formulated a state implementation committee (SICOM) headed by the UT Health Secretary to implement the national programme on orientation of medical officers working in primary health centres and civil dispensaries in Chandigarh.

The Rehabilitation Council of India will provide all infrastructure and funding to train the doctors working in health centres and civil dispensaries.

The decision to form such a committee was taken on July 27 at a meeting of the state Health Secretaries at New Delhi. The committee will also have the GMCH Director-Principal, Prof S.B.S. Mann, and the Medical Superintendent, Prof Raj Bahadur.

In the meantime, the Administration has written to the council for recognising this committee and releasing the allocated funds to conduct such training programmes to be completed by March, 2002, said Prof Raj Bahadur.

Executive council reviews progress

A meeting of the executive council under the chairmanship of the UT Social Welfare Secretary, Mr G. K. Marwaha, was held yesterday to discuss the utilisation of funds provided under the national programme of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities and progress with regard to training to the community-based rehabilitation workers.

It was stressed to chalk out a plan for monitoring and evaluation of the contribution made by these workers in their respective villages .

The council also decided to make plans for identifying multipurpose rural workers from various blocks of the Union Territory.

Out of the total budget under this scheme, Rs 45 lakh would be released for equipping various departments of the GMCH which include orthopaedics, psychiatry, ENT and ophthalmology which deal with disabilities, informed the Medical Superintendent, Prof Raj Bahadur.

The meeting was also attended by Ms Madhvi Kataria, Director, Social Welfare, UT, Dr K.K. Garg, Medical Superintendent, General Hospital, Sector 16, Prof H. M. Swamy, Head , Department of Community Medicine, GMCH and Prof B. S. Chavan, Head, Department of Psychiatry, GMCH.

PGI faculty bids farewell to Banerjee

The faculty members of the PGI today bid farewell to the outgoing Head of the Histopathology Department, Prof A.K. Banerjee.

Prof Banerjee who served the PGI for over 37 years retired on July 31. Meanwhile, Prof Kusum Joshi has taken over as the Head of the Histopathology Department.

Manikant, Neeraj emerge winners in TT meet

Chandigarh, August 3
Manikant in under-17 boys section and Neeraj Choudhary in men’s section emerged winners in the Panchkula district table tennis championship played at CL DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 11, Panchkula.

In the final, Manikant outplayed Prateek 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, while Neeraj overpowered Amit Goyal 11-7, 13-11, 9-11, 11-9. The meet was organised on the new scoring system where after two points service changes and now each game was of 21 points instead of previous 11 points.

Results: Under 17: semi-finals: Prateek b Mayank 11-13, 13-11, 11-6, 11-4; Manikant b Ravi Sharma 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6. Third place: Ravi Sharma b Mayank 11-0, 11-4, 11-7. Men’s: semifinals: Neeraj Chaudhary b Manikant 6-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-4; Amit Goyal b Ravi Sharma 5-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 14-12.

G.S. Antal, District Sports Officer, Panchkula, gave away the prizes.

Markfed volleyball camp

Markfed will organise a volleyball camp from August 8 to 10 at Chandigarh, where players from Patiala, Bhatinda, Jalandhar zones of the Markfed and 10 from each zone will take part. Out of total 30 trainees, 15 players will be finally selected, including three reserves. Sugarfed has also arranged a volleyball meet at Budewal (near Ludhiana) from August 28 to 30 in which Sugarfed, Markfed, Punjab Mandi Board, PSEB and PRTC will participate. This was stated by Mr Rajinder Bansal, sports officer of the corporation.

Carrom championship

The fifth inter-school carrom championship will begin here on Saturday at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, at 9 am where eight schools from city and Panchkula will take part. The events will be organised for students, below Class V, Class VI to VIII and in open category.

Increase in IT assessees’ number

With the widening of the tax base in Chandigarh, the number of income tax (IT) assessees in the city has gone up from about 1.1 lakh in 1998 to over 2.66 lakh in 2001.

According to a statement issued here today, consequent to the increase in the workload had necessitated a restructuring of the department and creating an additional IT Commissionerate in Chandigarh. The new Commissionerate, Chandigarh-II, has become operational and has jurisdiction over Sector 26 onwards in the city and the neighboring district of Ropar in Punjab. It consists of ranges IV, V and VI, while the first three Ranges will form part of Chandgarh-I.

Mrs Baljit Bains, a 1969 batch IRS officer, has assumed charge of Chandigarh-II. The areas of emphasis highlighted by Mrs Bains, according to the statement, include maximising tax collections, processing and issuance of refunds on priority, redress of all PAN-related problems and prompt issue of all pending PAN cards, and setting up a hotline for tax-payers’ grievances.

Several new townships have also been notified under the one-by-six scheme, which include Mohali, Ropar, Nangal, Naya Nangal, Kurali, Anandpur Sahib, Morinda and Kharar. An action plan has been drawn up by the department to educate and inform tax-payers about the scheme.

The new jurisdictions of commissionerates are: Range I: Mani Majra, Industrial Area (II) and Sectors 1 to 11.

Range II: Industrial Area (I), Sectors 12 to 18, 24 and 25.

Range III: Sectors 19 to 23.

Range IV: Sectors 26 to 35.

Range V: Sectors 36 onwards, all villages of the UT Chandigarh, Phases I to VII and Sectors 70 and 71 of Mohali, Industrial Area, Phase 1 to 8 of Mohali and the adjoining areas and villages on the right side of the road dividing Sectors 43 and 44 to Sohana.

Range VI: Phases VIII onwards in Mohali, villages and areas on the left side of the road dividing Sectors 43 and 44 to Sohana and areas falling in Ropar district.
