Cricket
tournaments this year Chandigarh, July 30 The meeting was informed that the offer to conduct the tournament was made to the secretary of the association, Mr S.S. Bawa, by the UT Education Department. After discussing all aspects of holding the tournament, including the financial aspects, the association decided to conduct the tournaments which would go a long way in promoting the game in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The meeting constituted a special task force, consisting of Col Judge and Mr Bawa to press the matter of affiliation of the UT Cricket Association with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In this connection the meeting was informed that the association would have to lobby hard to get affiliation. The groundwork for the affiliation has already been done with a high-powered team of the BCCI having visited Chandigarh and inspected the cricketing facilities. The two-member task force will go to Mumbai where the working committee of the BCCI is scheduled to meet in August. This would be the last meeting of the working committee prior to the annual general body meeting of the board which is generally held in late week of September every year. The annual general body adopts all recommendations made by the working committee, and the UT Cricket Association is hopeful that this body would recommend the affiliation of the association with the board. Meanwhile, a clinic for cricket umpires was also held at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium. About 15 PCA qualified umpires attended the clinic. During the clinic all aspects of the game were discussed in detail. |
Promising
spiker on the horizon Chandigarh, July 30 “Poonam (18) is a bright star, grooming into a class player”, said Shiv Bedi, SAI coach, who has been coaching her for the past nearly two years. Poonam had joined this centre in 1995 when she was in Class VI and over the years the hardwork of the girl has helped her go places. She represented UT in the senior national volleyball meet at Salem in1999-2000, junior national volleyball meet at Gurgaon in December last year, and in National Schools Games at Rewa (MP) in January this year. It was her magnificent performance at the junior nationals which forced the national selectors to include her in the national camp. The camp was meant mainly for the forthcoming Asian junior volleyball meet and other major championships. Bedi said it was the gradual improvement in her jumps which infused more confidence in Poonam. Poonam is a Class XII student of SD Public School, Sector 32. She is of the view that Chandigarh is the right place to go higher in sports but one must have a good coach and the urge to be regular in practice. She is all praise for the SAI centre, where she is residing, and is happy with the food, stay and other facilities at the centre. |

Kala seeks more funds
for development Chandigarh, July 30 While urging Mr Jacob to transfer some percentage of levy on liquor, imposed by the UT Administration, to the MCC, Mr Kala requested the Administrator to transfer more percentage of sales tax, collected by the Administration, to the civic body. During the meeting, the Administrator expressed happiness over the successful working of the last meeting of the House and assured that funds would not be a restraint for the development work. The Governor asked the acting Mayor to visit the slum areas and colonies and try to redress the grievances of the inhabitants. He asked him to give priority to those works which had been stalled during the last seven months due to inter-party and intra-party rivalries. Later, Mr Kala also took up the issue of cantilever removal with the Adviser to the Administrator, Ms Neeru Nanda. While urging the Adviser to regularise cantilevers in Mani Majra, he suggested that the Administration in lieu of doing so might even impose some fine on the owners. Ms Nanda assured him that she would take up the matter with the Finance Secretary, Mr Karan Avtar Singh. She will be shortly visiting the Transport Area and Bapu Dham Colony in Sector 26 to have a better understanding of the problems of the residents. |
