PGI officials have written to the UT Adviser to the Administrator, the UT Home Secretary and the Chandigarh police requesting them to intervene in the issue regarding discharge of the agitating elementary trained teachers (ETT) from Punjab who were admitted to the PGI about 10 days back.

It may be mentioned that the Chandigarh police had taken about 20 teachers on fast to the General Hospital, sector 16 , following disturbance in their electrolytic balance. Six of them were later referred to the PGI when their condition deteriorated.

However, despite the fact that the attending doctors in the emergency ward say they are fit to be discharged, the agitating teachers are refusing to vacate the beds they have been occupying in the PGI emergency ward for past 10 days.

As per sources, considering the peculiar circumstances, the PGI acting Medical Superintendent, Dr D. Bahera, has written to the authorities asking for help. These teachers had been admitted to the hospital by the police making it a medico-legal case, the police has also been asked to intervene.

SAS Nagar MC to serve notice for overstaying
Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, July 29
The SAS Nagar Municipal Council will issue a notice to the former Executive Officer of the civic body, Mr K.S. Brar, for overstaying in an official accommodation in the municipal council residential complex in Phase 5 here.

Mr Brar, who was transferred to the Gidderbaha civic body few months back, had failed to vacate the house. A decision in this regard was taken in a recent meeting of the civic body.

As per the rules, an official had to vacate a house on being transferred from a station. However, the house had not been vacated since the last five months. As a result, the existing Executive Officer, Mr Bhagwan Garg, had to reside in Chandigarh.

Mr Kulwant Singh, president of the civic body, said it was decided to levy market rent on Mr Brar. The market rent could amount to around Rs 1 lakh, an official of the civic body said.

During 1995, the then president, Mr H.S. Billa, had levied the market rent at the rate of Rs 20,000 per month on his predecessor.

Interestingly, the house occupied by the Executive Officer was the official accommodation of the president and that of the Executive Officer was occupied by a Town Planner from the Local Government Department.
