Tribune News Service

Persons working continuously for hours together on computers suffer from serious health problems like migraine, cervical spondylitis, poor vision, stress and pain in the neck muscles.

SPORTS ROUND-UP
Football culture picks up in city
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh
The Chandigarh Football Academy which was started last year held the second phase of trials for inducting six more trainees last week. The process of selecting six trainees from a total of 24 evoked criticism from certain quarters.

The bulk of the budget of the Chandigarh Sports Department is consumed by this academy which was started on the initiative of Lt Gen (retd) JFR Jacob. The academy is now looked after by the Additional Director, Sports, Wg Cmdr Sunil Bhatia. He is also the Administrative Officer at the GMCH, Sector 32.

As the year moves on, the expenditure will increase and the academy will have to look for a sponsor who could share at least part of the expenditure. Total dependence on government funds will be problematic in the future.

Football culture is fast catching up in Chandigarh with St Stephen’s Football Academy in Sector 45, Sanjay Football Academy in Sector 44 and the new SAI centre in DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 already providing an impetus to the game. But the academy having the richest budget and facilities in terms of training, will be the Chandigarh Football Academy which has been designed on the pattern of academies at Goa.

National games

This week saw hectic activity in preparation for the National Games as the city will host events in three disciplines. It has been asked to host rowing, tennis and golf events. Shooting which was originally allotted to Chandigarh was later shifted to SAS Nagar. Though the Organising Committee of the National Games is finding it difficult to host the games because of the delay in the release of funds, the venues at Chandigarh are almost ready. Sukhna Lake is an appropriate place for rowing. The problem was with boats which now, the officials claim, are available. Flood lighting of the tennis stadium could be another feather in the city’s cap if funds are released by the Organising Committee of the National Games.

Badminton tournament

The Panchkula District Badminton Championships which started at the Community Centre on Friday have evoked good response, particularly in the junior and sub-junior sections. But the organisers should have been careful not to have 21-point games. The tournament is recognised by the Haryana Badminton Association and the players need to be given the same kind of match order till the finals. The rules should not have been flouted since the players are accustomed to the normal points system consisting of best of three game of 15 points each in the boys and 11 points in the girl’s section.
