Yoga usefulness emphasised
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 26
Yoga is an excellent and the cheapest means for health for women, said yogacharya A.P. Srihan at the Sector 30 Yoga Divya Mandir while addressing the training camp.

A press note issued by Mr M.L. Vairagi, secretary of the Chandigarh Yoga Sabha, said Mr Srihan elaborated that menstruation was a periodic process in a female, in which the discharge of the blood took place from the cavity of the womb. Healthy menstruation depended upon the proper functioning of the overy and pituitary glands. He said it was a natural cycle function which must occur at regular intervals. Irregular menstruation cycle could cause many health problems in the female body, such as blood pressure and sleeplessness.

Mr Srihan also said after delivery, the abdominal muscles of a mother became loose. During this condition, only savasana and ujjayi pranayama were suggested. It was seen that fat gathered around the buttocks, hips and breasts after delivery. Yoga asanas should be practised after two months of the delivery, which could help to reduce the unwanted fat and bring the body back in shape.

The Chandigarh Yoga Sabha president, Mr Purshotam Mahajan, said men and women in good number were being benefited in the camp.

A pradhan yogacharya, Prof M. Lal, would conduct a special workshop on yoga therapy on July 28 and 29 on the concluding day of the yoga camp.

Health Dept wakes up to water-borne diseases
Our Correspondent

Panchkula, July 26
In view of the alarming rise in water-borne diseases, the district Health Department has decided to issue notices to various hotels, restaurants, eating joints and other vends selling eatables.

The notices will be issued under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, mentioned in the Haryana Municipal Council Act, 1973, to the traders dealing with eatables and milk products, including ice cream, ice, mineral water and other items.

Sources in the Health Department said raids would be conducted at different places and the licences of the violators would be cancelled. To implement the notices strictly, the department has started constituting committees to collect samples from various food outlets and other vends in the district.

The drive would be launched by the district Health Department after the formation of the Panchkula Municipal Council, exercising its local Municipal Act. Earlier, the drive was taken up by the Haryana Urban Development Authorities., sources added.

As per the records available with the Haryana Health Department, over 1000 to 1500 outdoor patients, suffering from water-borne diseases, reported to various government hospitals and primary health centres in the district during June every year. Against 1941 cases of water-borne disease in June 1999, 1498 cases were reported with the department in June 2000. Apart from 10 diarrhoea cases, over 1000 cases of water-borne diseases had come on the records with the department by June this year. In comparison with last year’s four cases of jaundice, 13 cases had been reported with the department.

Talking to Chandigarh Tribune Dr. H.C. Nagpal, Director, Health Services, Haryana, said notices would soon be served to the owners of hotels, restaurants, dhabas, eating joints and other vendors selling eatables. Raids would be conducted and licences of violators would be cancelled, if found guilty.

Workers of hotels and other eating joints would be examined for cleanliness and other diseases in Government Hospital, Sector 6 , to avoid spreading water-borne diseases and other infections, he added.

He said raid squads of government food inspectors were likely to be constituted within a day or two to tackle the situation.

Besides Estate Officer, Subdivisional Magistrates, Tehsildars and Block Development Officers of the area were unauthorised to conduct raids and take samples of the eatable under the Epidemic Act, he said.

Dr Nagpal disclosed that most of the diarrhoea cases were due to the seasonal variations and were a routine feature. A majority of the cases were from slum colonies and the villages located in remote areas of the district.

‘‘Fermentation and bacterial growth is more in rains and particular in slum areas, where rain water remains accumulated for weeks, leading to diarrhoea and jaundice’’, said Dr Nagpal. The department was doing chlorination of different water tanks. Chlorine was being distributed among residents of villages and slums.
