600 kg of unhygienic food articles destroyed

Chandigarh, July 6
The Health wing of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) today claimed to have seized and destroyed over 600 kg of food articles, which were kept for sale under insanitary and unhygienic conditions and were exposed to dust and flies. This was done as part of raids conducted against vendors of the city.

Two teams of the health wing under the supervision of the Medical Officer of Health ( MoH), Dr G.C Bansal, conducted surprise checks on the sale of cut fruits and other eatables in Sectors 7, 20, 21, 26, 29, 30, 34, Rock garden, Sukhna Lake, Bapu Dham and Colony No: 4 and 5.

Dr Bansal said that raids would be intensified in the next few days to curb the menace of cut-fruit vendors.

According to sources, health personnel of the civic body confiscated and destroyed ice and ice candies, cut fruit and vegetables, meat and meat products, sweets and sugar cane juice since these were found exposed to dust and flies.

In view of the onset of monsoons and danger of outbreak of an epidemic, the MC has started conducting surprise checks on the sale of unhygienic cut fruits under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.

140 donate blood

As many as 140 persons, including 40 couples, donated blood at a camp organised by the Baba Sheikh Farid Blood Donors Council, Mohali, at the Institute of Town Planners in Sector 35 here today. Mr Balwant Singh, Secretary of the council, said that he and his wife, Jaswant Kaur, donated blood for the 30th time today. Ms Amarjit Kaur, a social worker, inaugurated the camp. Mrs Sukhi Brar, an eminent Punjabi singer, was also present.

Cricket academy to start on July 15

Chandigarh, July 6
A cricket academy to be run by the Chandigarh Cricket Association under the aegis of the Punjab Cricket Association will start functioning from July 15 at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8-C, Chandigarh. It will be equipped with all kinds of modern facilities. Twenty players in the age group of 14 to 16 have been shortlisted for the academy. The PCA will provide cricket balls, nets and power-driven grass-cutting machines to the academy, said Mr Mohinder Singh, secretary of the CCA.

Mr Ravinder Talwar, Principal of the school, said their school had already produced renowned cricketers such as Kapil Dev, Ashok Malhotra and Chetan Sharma along with many national-level cricketers. It was their aim to continue to produce cricketers of this stature. This was a fine step in that direction taken by the CCA and the PCA. He said the Sports Authority of India cricket coach Sukhinder Bawa, posted at the DAVCC, had given good results and Test star Yuvraj Singh and national player Gaurav Gupta were one of the examples.

The players selected are Sunny Kassal, Udaye Kaul, Sidharth Vishal, Abhishek, Amanjeet Singh, Gaurav, Samarjit Singh, Narinder, Gaurav Chopra, Gurkirat Singh, Sumit, Prashant, Karanveer, Sukhjinder, Vijay, Aseem Gupta, Varun Khanna, Naresh and Saurav Singh.

Run to be organised:
The Sports Authority of India, Sports Training Centre, Sector 18, in coordination with the UT Health department will organise a symbolic run to mark the World Population Day on July 11. A slogan contest on the topic ‘Control Population’ shall also be held and first three contestants will be awarded cash prizes.

Carrom championship:
The Chandigarh Carrom Association will host the fifth Inter-School Carrom Championship for both boys and girls beginning on July 21 at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, in different categories and as per dates given. Up to Class V (July 21 and 22), Class VI to VIII (July 28 and 29) and inter-school open event on August 4 and 5.

Mr Mahesh Sekhri, general secretary of the association, said a team consisting of four players could be fielded in each of the above category. Entries close on July 16 with secretary, CCA, at 686, Sector 10, Panchkula, or KS Patwal Assistant Secretary at 593-A, Sector 32- A, Chandigarh.

4 cops suspended

Chandigarh, July 6
Four cops of the UT police were today placed under suspension and a departmental inquiry was instituted against them for their alleged role in the “rendezvous by R.K. Syal in Panchkula” while in judicial custody on July 3.

It is learnt that ASI Kanwar Singh, head constable Mohinder Singh, head constable Balraj Singh, head constable Dharam Pal and constable Jaspal Singh have been sent to the Police Lines and the DSP Traffic and Security, Mr Vijay Pal Singh, has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the episode. The suspended cops are alleged to have escorted the undertrial, Mr. R.K. Syal, Managing Director of Golden Forests, to his house in Panchkula in his own car after he had appeared before the Lok Adalat. The official jail van had been returned to the Sector 26 Police Lines.
