CM’s explanation
unconvincing: CPI Chandigarh, June 30 He said Dr Chohan and Zaffarwal were not ordinary persons. They were main leaders of the separatist movement in Punjab. He said Mr Badal was trying to put blame on other parties while he pursued the policy of appeasement towards militants. Dr Dayal said if Mr Badal was sincere to maintain peace and communal harmony, he should set up a judicial commission headed by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court to establish the truth about militancy and the forces behind it. |

SHSAD closes doors on Chohan, Zaffarwal Bhalwan (Sangrur), June 30 Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, President of the SHSAD, before addressing a function organised here today in connection with the 17th death anniversary of Nachhattar Singh Bhalwan, who was an SGPC member and district president of the SAD, said Dr Chohan and Zaffarwal should be admitted into their party by those who had called the two to India. Mr Tohra also said that it seemed that Dr Chohan had come to India after having an understanding with the Union Government and the Punjab Government. Mr Tohra further said that Dr Chohan and Zaffarwal were brought to India by vested interests to get their support in the ensuing Assembly elections. He said when the same vested interests faced the opposition of the people over the arrival of the two, they were now refusing to accept them by saying that they had no links with them. The President of the SHSAD also said that the proposed third front would not project any person in the ensuing assembly polls as the next Chief Minister of Punjab. He said the third front would contest all seats in the state. He said the Assembly elections in Punjab would be held on time. Mr Tohra said that besides the SHSAD, all other Akali Dals would be included in the third front. He said in case the BSP and the Lok Morcha wanted to join the third front, they would be welcomed. Regarding Mr Parkash Singh Badal’s government, Mr Tohra said it had “failed” on every front. It could not check corruption and the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, he said. He said Mr Badal’s “sangat darshan” programme should be named “lok darshan” programme as the Chief Minister was offering a “bunch of lies” to the public at such gatherings. Later, addressing the gathering, Mr Tohra called upon the people to give an opportunity to the third front to form a government after the ensuing Assembly elections. He also asked the party’s rank and file to talk about the unity of Punjabis to defeat the anti-Punjab forces. Mr Tohra also claimed that if Mr Badal appointed a commission, he would disclose the names of those Akalis who had offered ransom to militants to save themselves. He alleged that Mr Badal had forgotten his promises regarding the registration of cases against “guilty” police officers and the release of jailed Sikh youths. Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, general secretary of the SHSAD, called upon the people to bring a change in Punjab politics by offering power to the proposed third front. He said if the SHSAD came to power, no farmer would be “handcuffed” for non-payment of debt. Besides, unemployment would be curtailed to a great extent in the state, he promised. Sant Baba Tek Singh Dhanaula, district president of the SHSAD, assured Mr Tohra full cooperation in the Assembly elections. He said the district unit would not leave any stone upturned to win the maximum number of Assembly seats. Among others present on the occasion were Mr Bhupinder Singh Bhalwan, member, SGPC, and Mr Chand Singh Chatha, working committee member of the SHSAD. |
Dal Khalsa too wants its chief’s return from Pakistan Amritsar, June 30 Gajinder Singh, along with other Sikh youths had hijacked the Indian Airlines plane from Chandigarh to Pakistan on September 29, 1981 to protest against the arrest of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. While Satnam Singh Paonta Sahib, vice-chairman of the Dal Khalsa who was with the team which hijacked the plane has already reached India on fake documents by using Nepal route, Gajinder Singh was deported to Pakistan from Germany in PIA plane. Gajinder Singh has already stated that he wished to return to India. Dal Khalsa leaders, Mr Satnam Singh Paonta Sahib and Mr Kanwarpal Singh today announced that Gajinder Singh should come to India at the earliest to lead the movement. “We really feel his absence” they said. They, however, said that Gajinder Singh won’t come to India like Wassan Singh Zaffarwal. He would come to India by adopting legal procedure. Meanwhile, the Dal Khalsa today sought immediate resignation of Giani Kewal Singh as Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib on ‘moral grounds’. They alleged that a lawyer appeared on behalf of Giani Kewal Singh. They said that Giani Kewal Singh could be re-installed as Jathedar after he was proved innocent in the court. Coming heavily on Dr Jagjit Singh Chohan, the Dal Khalsa leaders said that he must tender apology for condemning Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. While welcoming the return of Dr Chohan to India the Dal Khalsa said they had adopted wait and watch policy with regard to the purpose behind his coming to India. They however, said that it was not easy to understand Dr Chohan. Earlier, the Dal Khalsa submitted performance report of 11 SGPC members to Akal Takht Jathedar, Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti. The report gave a detailed report on the “mal-functioning” of the SGPC. The Dal Khalsa in its report said that there was need of overhauling the apex body of the Sikhs. The Dal Khalsa strongly criticised the ban on the publication of new edition of ‘Saachi sakhi’, authored by Sirdar Kapur Singh, a former ICS officer at the behest of Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, general secretary, SGPC. The book carried some ‘objectionable’ material against Master Tara Singh, maternal grandfather of Bibi Kiranjot Kaur. The Dal Khalsa said that Sirdar Kapur Singh was bestowed with the honour of ‘Professor of Sikhism’ by Akal Takht and hence nobody could be allowed to stop the publication of his work. ‘Saachi Sakhi’. The radical outfit alleged that during his life time nobody had never raised objection over the book — Saachi Sakhi. The issue of ‘Path Bodh’, arranged by the Damdami Taksal (Bhinderan) at Takht Damdama Sahib was also criticised the Dal Khalsa alleged that the permission for holding the programme was given by the SGPC in gross violation of Sikh rehat maryada.
The Dal Khalsa said that nobody could be allowed to amend the Gurbani. The Dal Khalsa appreciated the resignation given by Giani Man Singh, Head Granthi Takht Damdama Sahib in protest against the organising of ‘Path Bodh’. It said that the ‘Panthic Maryada’ puhlished by the SGPC and approved by the Akal Takht could be accepted. In a significant statement, the Dal Khalsa urged Jathedar Akal Takht to ban the carrying of holy Guru Granth Sahib in trains. The Dal Khalsa said that if a ban could be imposed on keeping Guru Granth Sahib in marriage palaces why the holy Granth Sahib was being allowed to be carried in trains. The Dal Khalsa alleged that some deras were running their ‘religious shops’ in the name of Guru Granth Sahib and responsible for the denigration of the great Sikh institutions. |

Move to forge unity in Punjab Cong Chandigarh, June 30 Informed top party sources said that another meeting of the coordination committee, set up by the party high command under the chairmanship of Mr Moti Lal Vora to guide the party’s election campaign and to take policy decisions pertaining to Punjab, will be held on July 6 at Delhi. The members of the committee are Mrs Ambika Soni, Mr Mannmohan Singh, Mr Surinder Singla, Capt Amarinder Singh, Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Mr Jagmeet Brar, Mr R.L. Bhatia, Mrs Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder, Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo and Mrs Santosh Choudhary and Mr H. S. Hanspal. Sources said that the party high command has made up its mind to accommodate certain leaders as office bearers and executive members of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). The list of the office bearers and executive of the PPCC was released by the party high command on June 22, but it had created rumblings among a section of the Congress leaders in Punjab. Piqued at the non-inclusion of her certain supporters in the PPCC list, Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhattal had stayed away from the conference of panches and sarpanches organised by the party at Bathinda on June 25. She also did not attend the meeting of the coordination committee held on June 26 at Delhi. Sources said that, Mrs Bhattal, along with her supporters, would first meet Mrs Sonia Gandhi on her return from the USA to Delhi on July 2 and the coordination committee meeting on July 6. It is expected that her one or two important supporters would be included in the list. In fact, Mr Jagmeet Singh Brar, another senior Congress leader, who attended the June 26 meeting of the coordination committee, strongly pleaded for the inclusion of the name of Mr Avtar Singh Brar in the list of the office bearers of the PPCC. Mr Brar, according to sources, has told the high command that if the Congress team wanted to win the match (read elections) against formidable and untiring Akali leader, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, it should not leave out the best bet like Mr Avtar Singh, who was the only Congress leader to win the last Vidhan Sabha election from Faridkot belt known as a pocket burrow of Mr Badal. And the party high command, according to sources, was in agreement with Mr Jagmeet Singh’s estimate. Mr Jagmeet Singh, who has told Mrs Sonia Gandhi, that he would not contest the Punjab Assembly elections and only campaign for the party, conveyed to the party high command that with the removal of minor irritants like accommodating more leaders in the PPCC list, the party would become a fighting fit to wage an election war against Mr Badal. When contacted by TNS, Mr Jagmeet Singh confirmed that he had told that he would not contest the Assembly election. Sources said that Mr Jagmeet Singh had also urged the party high command to name party’s candidate for chief ministership. There should be no confusion in this connection in the party ranks. The party should enter in the election arena under the command of a general (candidate for chief ministership) named by the party high command, he has reportedly told the high command. However, as the party high command has put its full faith in the command of Capt Amarinder Singh hence he will be its choice for chief ministership. Party appears to be in a dilemma regarding initiating a dialogue to enter into an electoral alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Leaders like Mr Jagmeet Singh feel that even if the party does not want to enter into an electoral pact with the BSP but it should not shut its door to such parties. Electoral verdict can force such parties to form government. However, Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, is against entering into any alliance with the BSP, it is learnt. He opposed dialogue or seat adjustment with the BSP at the coordination committee meeting held on June 26, the sources added. |
TN police action condemned Chandigarh, June 30 In a written statement, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, said that “the manner in which the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and Ministers of the Union of India have been subjected to brutal physical manhandling and gross misbehaviour by the state police in Tamil Nadu calls for categorical condemnation from everyone in a modern civilised democratic society. “The inhuman manner of arrest of the dignitaries, for whatever charges levelled against them which is for the courts to look at, has evoked strong feelings of shock and disbelief. Such short-sighted actions are not only against the established principles of natural justice, but also cause our federal system of governance to suffer very unhealthy stress with its far reaching consequences,” Mr Badal said. Mr Brij Lal Rinwa said that the action of the Tamil Nadu was a black spot on democracy. He expressed the hope that the Prime Minister would take necessary steps to restore law of the land in Tamil Nadu. |

Living
with a bullet in his brain Jalandhar, June 30 Though the bullet has failed to snuff life out of him, it has made the going hellish for Kimti Lal, a Lopoke-based tailor, for his legs and left arm have been paralysed and he is confined to a wheelchair. However, he has never plunged into the sea of pessimism, not even when doctors told him before his operation recently that his arterial walls had got almost completely blocked on account of cholesterol deposition and there was little hope for his survival in case he underwent a heart operation, particularly due to the bullet lodged in his brain. His will-power instrumental in making him bear another shock when after a successful operation at the local Tagore Hospital on June 2, the surgeons attending to him told him that a post-operational period of one year was crucial for his survival and chances were bleak if the bullet changed its place. “I was told that I might die within a year but I took it into my stride, thinking that everything was in the hands of God and if he wanted me dead then nobody could save me”, said a zestful Kimti Lal, who had come for a routine post-operational check-up at the hospital. Recalling the fateful day, Kimti Lal said that after closing his shop, he was leaving for his home along with two-three friends when he saw a group of four-five youths sparing bullets on people passing through the street. “After this, I don’t remember anything except that I found myself in Amritsar Civil Hospital. Dr Ashwani Suri, a member of the team of surgeons which conducted the operation, said the operation of Kimti Lal was too intricate as it involved almost 100 per cent blockage of the two arteries. He said the risk factor was increased by the damage caused to the brain by the bullet over such a long period. “Actually, in case of blockage of two arteries, we need active brain support, which was not there in this case,” he said. Tests conducted on the patient revealed that he was recovering fast, he said. “The bullet usually doesn’t create any complications and at times, when I am busy working, I don’t even remember that I am carrying it in my brain”, said Kimti Lal. Dr Vijay Mahajan, Executive Director of the hospital, said: “It is nothing but the will-power of the patient which has enabled him to carry the bullet in his brain for so long”. Meanwhile, Kimti Lal maintained that he was back to his routine of waking up at 5.30 a.m. and going for a morning walk before opening his shop. |
