BJP, allies slam TN Government
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 30
The BJP and its allies today condemned the Tamil Nadu Government for its “brutality” in arresting former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and for manhandling two union ministers. The Congress, the CPI and the NCP, however, were guarded in their reactions saying that it was a wrong action on the part of the police.

The BJP expressed shock at the arrest, saying that the vindictive attitude adopted in a democratic set-up was highly deplorable. Comparing the treatment meted out to Mr Karunanidhi and Union Ministers Mr Murasoli Maran and Mr T R Balu to that done during the British raj, BJP president K Jana Krishnamurthy said it was perhaps for the first time in the past 50 years that two union ministers had been manhandled, leading to the hospitalisation of Mr Maran and Mr Balu being kept in police custody.

Cautiously reacting to the developments, the Congress, which was an ally of Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha in Tamil Nadu, said the party was not aware of the substantive facts of the case. Party spokesman Jaipal Reddy, however, added that the manner of Mr Karunanidhi’s arrest by the police was improper and unacceptable.

“We are deeply concerned with what is happening in Tamil Nadu,” Law Minister Arun Jaitley said referring to the early morning arrests.

Union Rural Development Minister M Venkiah Naidu termed the action as “atrocious and barbaric.”

The Janata Dal (United) asked the Centre to take “tough action” against the AIADMK government. The Samata Party said the arrest of Mr Karunanidhi and the treatment given to him and two central ministers reminded one of the dark days of the emergency.

The TDP described the arrest of the DMK supremo as “political vendatta” committed by the Tamil Nadu Government. While CPI national secretary and spokesman Shamim Faizi said the manner of Mr Karunanidhi’s arrest was wrong, the CPM described it as unfortunate. Leaders of various parties in Tamil Nadu, including Mr Vaiko, general secretary of the MDMK, former NDA ally in Tamil Nadu, condemned Mr Karunanidhi’s arrest and demanded his immediate release.

Former Prime Ministers V P Singh and Chandra Shekhar and former Union Minister Ramakrishna Hegde also condemned the incident. It was only Congress MP Mani Shankar Aiyar who, in his reaction, did not condemn the Chennai developments.

PoWs: summit rekindles hope
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 30
The Vajpayee-Musharraf summit set in the backdrop of the immortal symbol of love — Taj Mahal — has rekindled hopes among the families of 54 prisoners of war (PoWs) languishing in Pakistani jails.

Almost three decades have passed since they were reported missing in action, but their families firmly believe they would return one day.

“The issue of prisoners will certainly come up during the summit and we are optimistic that there would be some good news for the PoW families,” working president of the Missing Defence Personnel Relatives Association, Col R.K. Pattu, told The Tribune.

He said the veteran Gandhian leader, Ms Nirmala Deshpande, recently met senior Pakistan army officials and members of the Pakistan Human Rights Commission and discussed the issue of prisoners.

The Pakistani officials took up the matter with President Pervez Musharraf and he was positive in his response. This was the feed back the Gandhian leader got from Pakistan, Colonel Pattu said.

The two leaders had agreed to discuss the issue of prisoners at the External Affairs-Ministry level to work out a solution in resolving the issue, which has been agonising for the families since 1971.

However, the fall of the BJP led government in India and the coup in Pakistan dashed the hopes of many as they felt that their efforts had gone in vain.

But, the momentous opportunity in Agra summit has rekindled their hopes again and they are eager to mount pressure on the two governments to find a way out during the talks.

“We have submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Vajpayee and President Musharraf highlighting an early release of PoWs held captive in Pakistan jails,” Colonel Pattu said.

The Delhi unit of the Shiv Sena has also joined the issue in demanding the release of PoWs. Another hope of optimism for the families has come from the Centre’s stand in the court that they would consider giving dues and other benefits to the defence personnel since the day they went missing.

The government had all along maintained that these PoWs were “missing and presumed dead”.

Confusion at Musharraf’s haveli

New Delhi, June 30
Confusion reigns supreme in the backlanes of Golcha cinema, where stands the nondescript Neharwali haveli, Pakistani President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s birthplace, which he is to visit when he is here next month.

While local MLA Shoaib Iqbal is getting a “mehrab-e-yaadgar’ (memorial arch) constructed in the honour of the native who returns as a ‘traditional rival’, city Mayor Shanti Desai says they are working on a civic reception at the Red Fort for the Pakistani President.

The approach road to the haveli and the entire courtyard, which has defied commercialisation uptil now, will be cemented and Kota stone put up near the courtyard,” says Mr Iqbal.

As the Jain family stands to benefit from the face-lift being undertaken by the government, occupants of other portions of the haveli accost mediamen, contesting claims that it was in the Jains’ portion that the General spent his childhood.

The Golas, the family which owns other portions of the mansion, which was divided into eight parts, show the original plan of the haveli in a bid to prove that the dignitary could have lived there as “we purchased it from Husna Begum, supposedly General Musharraf’s aunt,” says Mr Sandeep Gola, one of the occupants .

The pre-Partition property papers, however, show that the haveli was the property of Qazi Motaminuddin Ahmed Tahir. Those living in portions seven and eight were the Qazi himself in portion eight and Qazi Moinuddin in portion seven.

“The Press told us two years ago that General Musharraf was born here,” says Mr Davinder Jain, who stays in portion seven. One of the Jain brothers says, “Chacha Khalid — supposed to be General Musharaff’s uncle —— had confirmed that the Jains’ house was once inhabited by General Musharraf’s parents.

While Uncle Khalid passed away recently, the Jains further add to the confusion by saying that they purchased the house from Mehboob Ali in the early ’60s. But ask the Golas or the Jains, as to the identity of the people they purchased the property from and “it’s in Persian, which we can’t read” is the standard reply of both families.

A common grandfather, as the parent of Mehboob Ali or from whom he purchased the house or that of Husna Begum could be a give away.

But the residents also do not want to play spoil sport as they blame it on the press, with one report even saying the haveli actually belonged to Nahar Khan, who was a minister of King Tughlak in the 13th century.

“Certainly this structure is not 700 years old,” says Mr Iqbal, conceding that it would be difficult even for General Musharraf to single out the portion where he was born. The elders confirm that the family lived here, he adds. PTI
