Tackling Win ’98 Shut Down problem
Vipul Verma

WINDOWS is by far the most user-friendly and easy to use operating system as it uses the easiest interface. Though other operating systems also have a Windows interface, yet going by compatibility, availability of software and features Windows is still the most popular operating system in the world.

However, since nothing in the world is perfect thus everything is also not so hunky-dory about Windows as it is also not an absolutely perfect operating system.

Often there are glitches and loopholes detected in this operating system, for which Microsoft Corporation makes available the patches, fixes and service pack depending upon the intensity and magnitude of the problem. One common problem, which has bothered the computer-users the world over is the shutdown problem in Windows ’98. Under this problem, the computer screen hangs just before shutdown, while the Window displays the message, "Windows is shutting down". It’s a common problem in Windows ’98 SE and still haunts the computer users.

Fast shutdown

There are basically many reasons for this problem. Some of the most common reasons are mentioned below. In some of the cases, this problem has been reported to be due to fast shutdown. Fast shutdown is one of the reasons, which could cause this problem, which may erupt one fine day. In this case, it is not necessary that the problem persist from the date of installation as it may come to the scene any day. However, the solution to this problem is simple as you can easily disable the "Fast Shutdown" using Msconfig. Following is the procedure for disabling Fast Shutdown. To begin with click on the Start button and then click Run. Now in the box named after Open type MSCONFIG, click the OK button to continue. This will open the System Configuration Utility window on your computer screen. This window has many options at the top end.

Out of the available options choose the ‘General’ tab and then click on the Advanced button that is located on the button right corner. This will open another Window on the computer screen named "Advanced Troubleshooting Settings". Here you will find some check boxes on the left side of the Window. Now find the "Disable fast shutdown" checkbox. And then check mark it or simply click inside the box. However, if this box is check marked already, then you do not need to do anything and simply press the cancel button and come out of these windows. Click the OK button and this will close the Advanced Troubleshooting Settings window. Further click OK button to close another open Window. Now you will be prompted to restart your computer for the new changes to take effect. Choose the restart option and let Windows reboot. On restarting, your fast shutdown option will be disabled and if the shutdown problem occurs due to this reason, it will be rectified.

Anti-virus system

Another possible reason for this kind of problem is the anti-virus system installed in your system. Normally, in old and un-updated versions, Norton Anti-virus and McAfee anti-virus are also seen cause shutdown problem in Windows. Normally, if you are using the Norton Anti-virus software or McAfee Virus scanner, regularly update your virus scanners. However, if they are too old, then neither you are protected from the onslaught of a fresh virus attack nor are you doing anything good to your system. In case of Norton Anti-virus always go for the live update periodically to update your virus definitions through the Internet. Even this can fix the problem of shutdown in some cases. However, if you are looking for a kind of permanent solution, then you can do it by simply editing your system registry as follows. However, before I tell you about the changes in registry, I would suggest you to keep a back up copy of the registry in order to meet any loss to your system. The required change in registry for Norton Anti virus software Fix is "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ control\ Shutdown\ ExclusionList"...and removes the NAVEX entry.

Hard disk

Another possible reason for the system hanging at the shutdown screen could be problems in your hard disk. For example, if there are bad sectors in your hard disk or if there is cross-linking of data then also the computer may hang and hang at the shutdown screen. Thus it is in your interest to scandisk the hard disk in thorough mode periodically as it will keep you informed about the physical health of your hard disk. Moreover if there is any problem like cross-linking of data scandisk will solve that problem. If your hard disk has developed bad sectors, then though temporarily this problem can be handled, yet there is no permanent solution of bad sectors.

Network server

Another possible reason for the shutdown problem could also the setting up the typical role of a computer as a network server. Though setting up a typical role of your computer to work as a server could elevate the performance of your machine, yet if the causative factor is more of a problem, then it is better to eliminate it. You can check this from the Control Panel>System. Now choose the performance tab and click on the file system button. This will open the Window File system properties. Click on the hard disk tab here and check the setting for "Typical role of this computer". If it has been set to desktop computer, then leave the setting as it is. Click cancel and come out of all open Windows. However, if the ‘Typical role of this computer’ has been set to a Network server, then change it to the desktop computer as it may also cause shutdown problem. With this setting, computer can have problems dumping the cache, which in turn, could cause the problem.

Fast find option

Another possible cause for this kind of a problem is the Fast find option. You can test by disabling this option to see whether this helps in removing your problem of hanging of your system at the shutdown screen. To disable the Fast Find option, click Start and then select Run. Now type MSCONFIG and click OK. In the system configuration utility click Advanced button at the bottom right corner. Now uncheck the "Microsoft Find Fast" check box and click OK. If this is unchecked then you need not do anything and then simply close all open windows. If this had been the causative factor for shutdown problem, then it will be sorted out. As another option you can choose to shut down your computer in DOS mode and then safely shut down your computer when you get the DOS prompt. This you can say as the bypass route to this problem.

However, if all these measures fail to solve your problem then you can log on to the Microsoft site at http://support.microsoft.com/directory/discontinue.asp?sd=gn or http://support.microsoft.com/directory/overview.asp for searching the fix made available by the Microsoft to fix this problem.
