AntiScanner

PORT scanning is a popular way for hackers to look for security weaknesses on thousands of computers connected to the Internet. Your computer has probably been scanned at one time or another — without you even knowing it. This is especially true if you have a dedicated connection. The chances of your computer being infiltrated are actually pretty small, but it’s still not a comforting thought. AntiScanner is a specialised security application that monitors your computer for port scanning. While the program resides quietly from the system tray, it’ll listen on any number of specified ports. AntiScanner won’t automatically monitor tens of thousands of ports on your computer, so you’ll have to enter them manually. For some help, the author’s site features a list of frequently scanned ports for six major hacking tools. Whenever scanning has been detected, the program can instantly disconnect your computer from the Internet. It can even send a customised message back to the scanner’s computer. In addition, AntiScanner logs every unauthorised attempt to gain access into your computer. The log may be viewed from within the program’s small interface, and saved as a plain text file for future reference. AntiScanner is a small program that doesn’t require installation. It’s freeware, courtesy of Status 3 Software. Download is available from http://status3.i-r.co.uk

Poetry Generator

Want a poet on your hard drive? Well, this program unlocks the bard within and you’ll most certainly be amazed! Actually, Poetry Generator randomly creates free verse poems and even some haiku. It uses a large vocabulary of words and phrases and combines them into surprisingly structured poems. More often than not, the program’s poetry makes sense though you’ll find many hilarious and peculiar creations. You obviously shouldn’t use the program to generate a poem for your creative writing class. However, you’ll find that it can provide some legitimate inspiration for your own work. The program’s Automatic function randomly selects a style and generates a poem. Some are titled and others are not. If you enjoy a particular style, click the similar button to read a comparable poem. A cool feature is that you can add both male and female names and have poetry personalised to include people of interest. Your favourite poems can be immediately printed or saved to disk as RTF-formatted text files. By highlighting and pressing Control + C, you can copy poems to the Clipboard for sharing with others. You’ll also have the option of editing poems from within the programme using favourite font styles and colours. Poetry Generator is freeware. The content appears to be more adult-oriented, but there’s really nothing obscene. Suggested OS: Windows 95. Windows NT. Windows ’98. Windows 2000. Windows Me. Download from www.rkwest.com

Populist v2.1a Beta

This clipboard utility shows the past 15 entries that were copied to the clipboard, with no size limit whatsoever. Even Drag and Drop is supported. There’s also a nifty search feature that let’s you instantly locate exactly what you’re trying to locate. If your current project requires you to insert a lot of text, this is the tool you want at your disposal. All text entries are easily accessible from the System Tray. They can be sorted into categories for different programs. Once clicked an entry is copied into the clipboard and can then be pasted into any program. However, Populist is even easier to use than that if you are using it with a program that supports ‘Drag and Drop’. Many programs support drag and drop including Internet Explorer and Netscape, Office applications, Wordpad, and so on. Populist can still be used with non-drag and drop programs by utilising the quick access system tray clipboard entries. As Populist stores the last 15 text entries that passed through the clipboard it is a simple matter to copy up to 15 entries to the clipboard and then drag and drop them from within Populist to make them permanent entries. It’s quite easy to rely on Populist to store data from any kind of program. As the amount of data grows though, finding anything is not a problem with Populist’s integrated fast search feature. OpenExpert/Free

One of the key drawbacks to Windows computing is that a file type can only be associated with one application. For example, an HTML document will appear in Internet Explorer, while a Bitmap automatically loads in your main graphics program. For some this configuration is no big deal, but for many others it’s a real inconvenience. OpenExpert is a novel utility that gives you the power of associating a file type with multiple applications. This way, you can load an HTML document into your text editor as easily as you would in your browser. OpenExpert smoothly integrates into the Windows context menu. By right-clicking a file, you simply send your pointer to the "Open With" menu and select one of the few applications for that item. OpenExpert lets you associate a file type with an unlimited number of applications. You can even associate it with different versions of the same program. Best of all, setting up this new file system is a piece of cake. From OpenExpert’s interface, you’ll enter a file extension and follow the dialog to pick the applications. Extensions are organised into a drop-down menu, so you can easily manage applications for each file type. Further, the program features a separate window that displays all registered applications. The program lets you save all of your custom settings and import them to other computers. OpenExpert should be a time saving tool for any Windows user. This download is free for personal use, though businesses may evaluate it for 30 days. Grab it from www.baxbex.com
