Aditya Puri, Nadia Saini corner glory

Aditya Puri of Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, and Nadia Saini of DAV Public School, Sector 8, became the proud winners in the sub-junior boys and junior girls singles sections, respectively, in the first Ajit Karam Singh Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament played here today at the Sector 23 TT hall. Nadia won her third title today, the other two being in the sub-junior and cadet girls section.

Aditya had to face a stiff competition from Sajal Kaushal of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, and the match was stretched to five games. Finally, Aditya won, at 22-20, 19-21, 21-13, 19-21, 21-11.

The girls final between Nadia and Meenakshi from Jalandhar also proved to be thrilling with latter taking away the first game from the city girl who, however, was at her best in the other three games and won the match, 13-21, 21-13, 21-12, 21-19.

Dinesh Singh will meet Rohit Mahajan of Amritsar in tomorrow’s junior boys final.

Sunil, Anoop KC, Dheeraj Singh and Dinesh Singh in men singles while Anuradha Bansal, Nadia Saini, Anu and Rishu in women singles section have made it to the last four of their respective events.

Results: sub-junior boys — semi- finals: Sajal b Mayank (Jal), 21-15, 21-12, 21-14; Aditya Puri b Suraj (Asr), 21-17, 19-21, 21-17, 21-13.

Junior girls: semi-finals — Nadia b Arshdeep Kaur (MM-21), 22-20, 21-13, 21-16; Meenakshi (Jal) b Megha Kassal (AKSIPS-41) 21-15, 21-14, 21-16. Junior boys :semi-finals — Dinesh b Aditya, 21-9, 21-14, 21-11; Rohit Mahajan b Sajal, 19-21, 21-16, 21-15, 21-13.

Summer cricket

Chandigarh were 77 for the loss of two wickets at the close of the first day’s play in their match against Ropar in the PCA Pre-Summer cricket tournament for FC Mittal Trophy being played here at DAV Senior Secondary school, Sector 8. In another match played today at the PCA Stadium, SAS Nagar, Mohali in its match against Mansa piled up a total of 361 runs for the loss of six wickets with Kamal Walia and Kailash Sanwal scoring 105 and 64 runs, respectively.

In another pre-season under-16 tie played between Mohali and Ludhiana at the MCA grounds, SAS Nagar, Ludhiana were 73 for two wickets in 29 overs in their first innings in reply to Mohali’s first innings score of 196 all out in 58.1 overs.

Brief scores :Ropar: 245 all out in 70 overs (Sandeep 52, Manish 41, Hatish 40 and Deepak 30; Vipul 3 for 38, Iqbal 2 for 40, Sanjay Dhull 2 for 50). Chandigarh: 77 for 2 in 18 overs (Vikram Sodhi 23 n.o., Nagesh Gupta 23 n.o.

Golf meet

Ashu Bachittar Singh secured first place in the Open Golf Competition held today at the Shivalik Golf Course, Chandi Mandir, where nearly 100 participants in various sections and age groups took part. The second place went to Brig Keshwa Nand and third to Col K.B. Singh. The most accurate shot was hit by Commander R.B.S. Gill. Major General S.S. Randhawa (retd) gave away the prizes.

Saroj, Tejinder win titles

Saroj Chandel and Tejinder Harry won the women and men singles titles, respectively, in the Raj Kumar Babuta Memorial Prize Money Carom Ranking Tournament which concluded here today at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45. Harry outplayed young Ramanpreet,11-25, 25-16, 25-20. In women’s final, Saroj, representing the Reserve Bank of India, bagged the title by defeating Shikha Nanda of Government Model School, Sector 37, 25-08, 25-02. Mr Raj Kumar Sharma, vice-president of the Chandigarh Carom Association, gave away the prizes.

Results: semi-finals (men) — Ramanpreet Pahwa b Gagandeep, 25-23, 25-23; Tejinder Harry b Jagdish Dhir, 16-25, 25-11, 25-02: (women) — Shikha Nanda b Bhanu Jain, 25-13, 25-15; Saroj Chandel b Puneet Lamba, 25-23, 25-05.

According to Mr Mahesh Sekhri, secretary of the CCA, the final ranking is: men singles — Tejinder Harry 1, Ramanpreet 2, Jagdish Dhir 3, Gagandeep 4, Mukesh Piplani 5, Devinderjit Singh 6, K.S. Patwal 7 and Sanjay Negi 8; women singles — Saroj Chandel 1, Shikha Nanda 2, Bhanu Jain 3 and Puneet Lamba 4.
