APHC has no role to play in talks:
Farooq Jammu, May 25 He told newspersons here today that the All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) had no role to play because its leaders drew strength and sustenance from Pakistani guns. “Once the guns fall silent, the APHC leaders will have to pack up,” he said. Dr Abdullah appreciated the “bold step” taken by the Centre in the shape of an invitation to General Musharraf for talks. He said the first bold steps were taken when the Prime Minister initiated the peace process and announced the enforcement of the ceasefire. He said the borders remained quiet but the state witnessed escalated violence in which innocent civilians and security personnel were targeted. He said in this context he was happy that the ceasefire had been withdrawn when separatists and militant groups had not responded positively to it. In reply to a question, the Chief Minister said talks between New Delhi and Islamabad would continue along with parleys between the government’s chief negotiator, Mr K.C. Pant, and political groups within Jammu and Kashmir. He said the operation against the militants would run concurrently. |
DFP apex body meeting
today Srinagar, May 25 Mr Shah is awaiting response from Gen Pervez Musharraf, who is reported to have received the letter on Tuesday. “Our efforts of response to the Centre’s offer of talks are being appreciated by all in Pakistan, the USA and London, Mr Shah said. “Some of these leaders told me that the initiation of dialogue should not be snapped on our side”, he added. Mr Shah was the only separatist leader, who early this month positively responded to talks offer by Mr Pant. Mr Pant’s emissary, Mr Naresh Kumar Jain, on May 15 delivered a letter to him (Mr Shah) seeking his cooperation and inviting him to Delhi for talks. The Hurriyat Conference has rejected the Centre’s offer. The DFP president lamented the reported statement of Hurriyat leaders that it would not respond to DFP’s letter. Mr Shah who was thrown out of the Hurriyat Conference some years ago, wrote to all prominent groups in Kashmir and outside to muster support for the initiation of a dialogue with the Central Government. The Central Government appointed Mr Pant to initiate a dialogue with various Kashmiri groups for restoration of peace in Jammu and Kashmir. “I want to take all into confidence”, said Mr Shah adding that there were “vested interests” at work to deviate the process of dialogue with the Centre that would ultimately lead to the solution of the Kashmir issue. Mr Shah said his party’s senior vice-president, Mehmood Ahmad Sagar, was trying to contact leaders of the PoK and Pakistan. Mr Shah has been touring various parts of Leh, Kargil, Drass (Ladakh), Doda, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch districts in Jammu region and the entire valley. “I want to take all communities into confidence”, he said adding that he told leaders of these communities about his perception. “If they do not agree to our point of view, let the opinions come forward”, Mr Shah commented. He said a congenial atmosphere was needed to be created for the talks with the Centre. Mr Shah pointed out that the militants at present have not rejected the offer, but favoured a “congenial atmosphere” for talks. |
