HIGH COURT Chandigarh, May 9 Pronouncing the orders in the open court, the Bench, comprising Mr Justice H.S. Bedi and Mr Justice A.S. Garg, also issued notice to the acquitted accused for July 18. The accused in the case were booked by the Haryana Police for murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy under Sections 302, 307 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code in December, 1980, after 44 persons died in Sirsa district and another 68 lost their vision permanently following the consumption of spurious liquor. According to the prosecution, the liquor was prepared and marketed by the accused. The prosecution had added that the chemical examiner’s report had confirmed the presence of methanol — a poisonous substance — in the liquor. The accused, when confronted with the incriminating evidence against them, had denied the allegations. Claiming to be innocent, they had asked for a trial. After hearing the arguments in the case, Sirsa’s Additional District and Sessions Judge had sentenced two accused to life imprisonment while acquitting the rest. Land-grabbing case The High Court on Wednesday directed Jalandhar’s Deputy Commissioner to be personally present in the court if reply on action taken by the authorities on the SDM’s report in a land grabbing case was not filed by May 31. Issuing the directions, Mr Justice R.S. Mongia and Mr Justice K.C. Gupta of the High Court also directed the Deputy Advocate General, appearing for the state of Punjab, to “seek instructions from the DC as to what action has been taken on the report dated December 31, 1998, pertaining to alleged grabbing of property”. The SDM, in his report, had stated that a clerk in the DC’s office had prepared false documents pertaining to disputed property in Kishanpura Mohalla in Jalandhar. In his petition, Bal Krishan Saini of Jalandhar had earlier sought action on the SDM’s report. He had alleged that the DC was sitting on the matter as the accused was working as a clerk in his office. |
