PCCTU elections today

Ludhiana, May 5
Nearly 400 delegates from 142 non government colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh are expected to participate in the last phase of annual elections of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union at GGN Khalsa College here tomorrow.

While the election of the office-bearers of the union will be unanimously held because of single nominations for each post, eleven seats of the Executive Committee would witness a contest as there are 19 candidates in the fray. Out of the 19 candidates, three are from the city. But with the election of Mr. Kuldip Singh as president of the District Council, only two candidates, namely Mr Kanwaljit Singh and Mr V.K. Bhardwaj were in the race. The district has a strength of 70 delegates.

DISTRICT COURTS
3 get life term for murder

Ludhiana, May 5
The District and Sessions Judge, Mr Justice S.S. Arora, has given life imprisonment under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC to Raj Rani (67), her daughter Manjit Rani (26) and her son Ranjit Kumar, all residents of Mundian Kalan, for murdering Naresh Kumar Sharma (42) and his son Vishal Sharma (7).

Each of the convicts have been fined Rs 3,000. However, an accused, Krishan Kumar Sharma (69), has been acquitted in this case. It could not be proved that he had been on the spot at the time of the murder.

Krishan Kumar and Raj Rani are the uncle and aunt, respectively, of Naresh Kumar. Raj Rani and her children had killed Naresh and his son on December 5, 1996, due to a land dispute.

ITO’s son gets bail

Jeevanjot Singh, a resident of Haibowal Kalan and son of an Income Tax Officer, was granted bail by the District and Sessions Judge, Mr Justice S.S. Arora, in a case registered under Sections 382, 511 and 34 of the IPC in the Model Town police station.

Jeevanjot Singh and his accomplice, Sanjay Kumar, had reportedly tried to rob a jeweller’s shop on April 7 in Model Town here. Earlier, the Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Justice H.S. Madan, had released Sanjay Kumar on bail.
