Decision to stagger office hours
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 5
The Chandigarh Administration and the Haryana Government have decided to stagger timings of their offices situated in the Union territory.

This decision was taken at a high-level meeting, presided over by the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (Retd). According to new timings, the UT and the Haryana Government offices will function from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. However, the Punjab Government offices will function from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. sources said, adding that new timings will be notified soon.

The decision, the sources said, was aimed at easing the traffic congestion on the city roads during the office hours. It has been observed that several city roads, including the Madhya Marg, witness traffic jams during the office hours since a majority of office-goers used their own vehicles to reach their offices in the absence of an efficient public transport system.

It may be recalled that the staggering of the office-timings had been under consideration for quite some time. It has been pointed that the decision will help ease traffic on the roads. The city has one of the highest per capita vehicles in the country.
