Mohali civic body chief on the mat
Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, April 25
Leading their charge against the ruling group in the local Municipal Council, Opposition councillors today levelled serious allegations against the President, Mr Kulwant Singh, particularly for “misleading” them on development work in the town. Diverting funds sanctioned for a tubewell in Industrial Area Phase I and II to Phase IX without the approval of the House was a serious matter, they added.

Talking to mediapersons, Mr SS Patwari said work on boring a tubewell in Phase IX started on April 19 whereas the agenda item to divert the funds for the tubewell from Industrial Area, Phase I and II, to the residential area in Phase IX was put up for approval in the meeting of the civic body on April 23. He said the President had promised to get five tubewells bored by April but so far only two had been sanctioned.

The Principal Secretary, Local Government Department, had marked an enquiry into the diversion of the sanctioned funds from one area to another.

Mr Manjit Singh Sethi, said the civic body had never bothered to get the quality of water checked when taking over the new tubewells from the Sewerage Board.

On the issue of the revised water and sewerage rates, they said the President had not informed the Public Health Department about the rolled back rates, thereby putting a burden on the residents.

Mr Patwari said he had urged the government to take back the increased water and sewerage rates.

Mr Manmohan Singh Langh said after an enquiry into the sale of wood at high rates at the local cremation ground was marked by the Chief Minister’s office on his complaint, officials of the civic body had approached him “for a compromise.” I have told them to refund the excess money charged from the kith and kin of the deceased and then I will talk on the issue”. Mr Sethi alleged that the record of the receipts issued at the cremation ground was being tampered with to avoid action against the guilty.
