Health bodies to focus on mental health
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 7
On the occasion of World Health Day, today, health institutions and social organisations joined hands to create awareness about the focus of this year —mental health. An estimated 400 million people suffer from mental and neurological disorders or from psychological problems. Stress, alcohol and drug abuse can affect adults and children from all the strata of the society. It has been estimated that 15 per cent women and 11 per cent men suffer from mental ailments in India.

Addressing a scientific session organised by the Indian Public Health Association (IPHA) at the Advanced Paediatric Centre auditorium, the PGI Director, Prof S.K. Sharma, said India required an effective policy on treatment of mentally retarded people .He asserted that reduction in exclusion of and discrimination against those people affected by mental disorders would enable their families to live a much better life.

Dr Inderjit Walia, president , IPHA, said the focus on mental health was in recognition of the increasing burden of mental and brain disorders on a large number of people and their families. Prof Rajesh Kumar, Head, Department of Community Medicine, extended an offer to everyone to become members of IPHA and work towards betterment of the public health system.

In her keynote address, Prof Savita Malhotra, Head, Department of Psychiatry, said the spectrum of mental illness was different in various age groups while the overall prevalance of the problem was quite worrying. She said myth and ignorance about mental illness at various stages made the problem worse. Nearly 150 people participated in the programme

The Chandigarh branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) also observed World Health Day by organising a function at the Dr P.N. Chhutani Memorial Complex in Sector 35. Dr G.S. Kochhar, president , IMA, Chandigarh , in his welcome address, said health had been defined in the WHO constitution as a state of complete mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of a disease or infirmity. He said alcohol and drug abuse was a major problem globally and a large number of people die due to this. In 2000, one suicide occurred every 40 seconds due to stress, which was a major factor behind mental illness, he said.

Dr Ajit Awasthi, consultant psychiatrist, PGI, described various anxiety disorders and ways to diagnose them. He said anxiety was an unpleasant emotional state and the technology at our disposal was well-equipped to treat such disorders.

Speaking on management of epilepsy, Dr Vivek Lal, consultant neurologist, PGI, said in 90 per cent of cases, the cause could not be ascertained. He also discussed the drug treatment for various types of epilepsy. The scientific session was followed by an interaction with the members of the audience.

The Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, organised a camp at Daddu majra village to motivate those using drugs and alcohol reinforcing the theme of the year — mental health. Organised in association with the Trained Nurses Association of India and the Servants of People Society, a social organisation, it was inaugurated by Prof S.B.S. Mann, Director-Principal, GMCH. He praised the local community leaders for actively participating in the programme.

According to Prof B.S. Chavan, Head, Psychiatry Department, GMCH, complete detoxification required approximately 15 days. The one-day camp organised today was essentially aimed at initiating this process, in which 52 patients attended, who would be followed up in the regular clinic on Tuesday in the GMCH.

Ms Premlata, nursing sister, GMCH, delivered a lecture on remedial measures for stress relief in nursing.
