 attack: Dr Chisti
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, April 2
Ludhiana city and its surrounding areas have witnessed an alarming increase in the number of heart-related diseases. Not surprisingly, most of these cases are reported only at the advanced stage or at least not before there is some problem like chest pain or even a mild heart attack.

According to Dr Murtaza Chisti, Chief Cardiac Surgeon at a local heart centre, the concept of preventive medicare is yet to be adopted by people in India. Some serious ailments like diabetes, hypertension and cardiac problems do not show any symptoms that could make the patient to approach a doctor at an early stage. In case these diseases are detected at an early stage the treatment can yield better results. "We can prevent heart disease from happening in the first place", he said.

The renowned cardiac surgeon, who introduced heart surgery in Ludhiana after his decade-long stint in the USA and Australia, observed that the lifestyle makes the people here more prone to heart ailments. Dr Chisti has performed about 2,000 open heart surgeries so far. This mainly includes food habits like the maximum consumption of saturated fats, fried food, excessive liquor, insufficient quantity of fresh vegetables and fruits and also lack of physical activity.

However, he pointed out, "one notable factor in Punjab is that people do not smoke here as much as elsewhere in the country".

Dr Chisti suggested that good dietary habits and physical exercise should be inculcated right from the childhood as it becomes a habit for rest of life. Moreover, he advised that after the age of 30 people should go in for regular health check up at least once in six months for diabetes, hypertension and blood cholesterol, the main causative factors for heart diseases.

The doctor suggested that people should also be cautious about high risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, unhealthy dietary habits, lack of physical exercise, obesity, stress, anger and frustration as they can also lead to heart problems.

Vacha, the brain tonic
Dr. R. Vatsyayan

Vacha is one of the most renowned herbs used for the rejuvenation of the brain and the nervous system. In Sanskrit, vacha, literally means speaking. Vacha (Botanical – Acorus calamus, Hindi – Bach) grows all over India in areas elevated upto 5.000 feet, in marshes and is also cultivated. It is a strongly aromatic, semi-aquatic perennial herb with a ginger-like stem, which spreads in the ground. This rhizome part of vacha is of medicinal use.

Vacha has been described as bitter and pungent in taste and hot and light in effect. It alleviates kapha and vata but aggravates pitta. Dry rhizomes of vacha contain a yellow aromatic oil that is volatile in nature. It also has a bitter glycocide, known as acorin.

In the ayurvedic system of medicine, vacha is used as a nervine tonic and anti-stammering drug. Experimental studies have shown that it is a potent psycho-pharmacological agent, having a positive effect on the memory and the learning process. Many ancient texts have described vacha as an anti-epileptic and anti-hysteric herb. It also known to possess carminative, digestive, diuretic and mildly sedative properties.

Vacha can be used as a household remedy for many ailments. Some of its common uses are as under:

Taken with warm water, half-a-pinch of vacha powder works well in loss of appetite, flatulence, distaste, dull abdominal pain and worms. It is a herb of choice to be used in case of loud eructations also.

Combine the powders of vacha, shankhpushpi and brahmi in equal amounts. Half-a-teaspoonful of this powder, mixed with one teaspoonful of honey, if taken daily, is a good adjunct in case of epilepsy and mental retardation.

Powder of vacha and white sandal is a very effective face pack in the treatment of blemishes and pimples.

In many Indian homes, customarily vacha is administered with honey in minute quantities to infants on the 11th and 21st day of birth. It is believed that this practice makes the child mentally active and talkative.

Some classic Ayurvedic formulation like sarswatarishta and sarswata churna, where vacha is used as chief ingredient, are used for the promotion of memory and also in treatment of psychiatric problems. Taken by itself, an average dose of vacha powder is usually 125 mg to 500 mg. Overdose can induce vomiting. In the market, two or three varieties of vacha are available. The best variety is known as ghorha vacha.

Jail games to be organised after four years
Jupinderjit Singh
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, April 2
After a gap of four years, the Prisons Department, Punjab, has finally received a nod from the state government to hold the Annual Inter-Jail Games, had been denied to the convicts ever since the SAD-BJP government came into power in the state.

The two-day games scheduled to be held on April 6-7 at Central Jail, Patiala, were held last in 1996 during the Congress regime. Since then, they were scheduled and postponed several times either due to the paucity of funds or the non-availability of some top government representative or the minister to inaugurate or preside over it.

While the authorities concerned deny that their was lack of political will and claimed it ‘just happened’ that the games were not held, sources say that as the Akali government enters the last year of its present tenure, it does not want to leave any stone unturned for getting all around goodwill, hence, the decision.

From the perspective of a convict not only do the competitions offer them a respite from their monotonous lifestyle, but are also important from the reform point of view.

As there is a growing tendency in the world to call the jails, reform houses, (although not officially declared so far in the state) and the prisoners, victims of circumstances, rather than hardened criminals deserving punishment only, the need of having recreational activities like games has been largely stressed.

The constant deferring of the games had left the prisoners resenting the local jail authorities and senior officials. Representations, on which reports were published in several newspapers, were sent to the Chief Minister. The prisoners had also apprised the judicial officers visiting the jails of their demand regularly.

As expected, there was jubilation among the prisoners here who had been practising hard for the past several years. Convicts of the Borstal Jail, which has only juvenile convicts, has always stood among the winners in various events in the past.

Apart from recreation, the games also offers an opportunity to several skilled workers to exhibit their work in the jail. It is customary for jails to organise an exhibition of items including furniture, embroidered darris, bed- sheets and other handicraft goods at the time of the games. Besides serving as a source of revenue for the jails, it also brings satisfaction to the jail inmates, whose produce gets buyers.
