Artificial limbs camp

Panchkula, April 2
Free artificial limb camp organised by the Rotary Club was formally inaugurated today at Saket Hospital, Chandi Mandir by Rotarian Ranjit Bhatia, district Governor of Rotary International District 3080. Prosthetics including calipers, crutches and other aides will be provided free of cost to the handicapped persons registering themselves during the camp between 8 am to 11 am.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr S.K Monga, Deputy Commissioner, Panchkula lauded the club’s efforts and sought the regular support to the Saket Hospital to provide artificial limbs to the disabled.

The camp, which will be on till April 8 is being financially supported by the Rotarians of Rotary Clubs of Jersey and Ilkley-Yorkshire, UK and the UK based Rotary Jaipur Limbs Project Trust, while a team of 15 trained technicians and equipment have been provided by the Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti New Delhi.

Mr Alan Smith and his wife Lynn Smith of Rotary Club Jersey UK, who had been instrumental in raising funds for this project and have flown in specially to personally to oversee the arrangements and participate in its management.

According to the president of the Rotary Club the club shall also provide free boarding and lodging to the patients and one attendant at Saket, while they would have to bear the travel expenses. C.P. Thakur to open PGI OPD

The new OPD of the PGI will be formally inaugurated by the Union Health Minister, Dr C.P. Thakur, on April 4.

The block and the facilities were thrown open for the patients on March 19. According to the PGI Director, Prof S.K. Sharma, the new OPD was “ made operational so that it gets tuned up by the date of inauguration.

The building completed about a year and a half back has been awaiting a formal opening by a VVIP. Even though the institute authorities had written to the PMO requesting the Prime Minister to inaugurate the new OPD, due to one reason or the other, the inauguration date kept getting delayed.

Jagdeep, K. Smiti to represent India

According to Mr Baljinder Singh Banwait, secretary of the Chandigarh Ball Badminton Association, the sub-juniors will now have to play in below-15 category instead of earlier practice of playing in below-16 category. For juniors the permitted age category has been lowered to 19 which was earlier 22. Mr Banwait also announced that local players, Jagdeep Kaur of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, and K.Smiti of Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, would represent India in a series of exhibition matches.

The 21st Sub-Junior nationals will be held at Mysore in the last week of September, the 47th Senior National Ball Badminton Meet will be held at Coimbatore in January 2002, North Zone ball badminton championship will be held at Jammu and Kashmir, whereas competitions east zone will be held at Orissa for west zone at Rajasthan and for south zone at Pondicherry.

Sanitation drive

A special sanitation drive has been launched by the Medical Officer of Health ( MOH), MC, to clean up various sectors in the city. As part of the drive, the city has been divided into four zones and almost two sectors are cleaned up everyday, besides the routine cleanliness.

The MOH, Dr S.S Cheema, said the drive had been undertaken to spruce up various sectors before the onset of summers so as to keep away flies and mosquitoes. While the drive is scheduled for a period of 15 days, but it will be carried out till work is completed in all sectors of the city and the nearby villages.

Residents of various areas have been complaining from time to time about the poor sanitary conditions in their respective areas. The drive will not affect the routine cleaning operations.
